Tuesday 24 March

Good morning amazing Goldfinches. I imagine yesterday was a little strange... but hopefully fun.

In my house we had a go at using the colour coded timetable- we didn’t stick to it completely but managed a bike ride in a quiet place without lots of people. In the morning, my children had a go at doing some maths and spellings or writing but then we spent most of the afternoon outside. Later, Toby and Amelie had a go at the space rocket Lego challenge and Lola helped me to plant some flowers in pots to put outside.

One of the things we are going to do today is write a little hello letter to post to my Nan and Gran who live a long way away. We think it will cheer them up like your rainbow messages to the Old People’s home.

I wonder if you have anyone who you might write a letter to or make a card for?

Another thing we are going to try is PE with Joe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6r99N3kXME

School Jobs  (see the attached file 'Home Learning Timetable Wb 23.3.20)

Today choose to do a different job from your pack e.g. a reading comprehension. This will help you with our Science topic on habitats. Then you could go outside in your garden and make a habitat  (Bug Hotel). We are going to mend the one Toby made last year which has fallen apart a little over winter. This is what it looks like at the moment but hopefully I can send an improved picture once it’s been mended.

Geography- your task for this week is as I explained in yesterday's blog. (Have another look if you want to remind yourself.

Volcanoes - use materials from your house to make a volcano

or

Rivers - watch the Fresh Water Planet Earth programme on BBC I-Player. I have uploaded some links on the Goldfinches Class page on the website to help you with your research.

Keep having a look at our school Twitter page as lots of teachers are posting on there.

Look after each other today and more from me tomorrow,

Mrs Evans

Good Morning Owls (Tuesday), by Mrs Campion

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 3:27pm

Hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday, It certainly feels strange not coming to school and Mrs Hoskins and I are both missing all of your lovely, smiling faces.

Thank you for sharing some of the lovely things you have been up to.I am so proud of you all and how hard you are working already! It really made me smile to see some of you drawing, planting sunflowers, doing maths, learning to whistle, reading at home, taking part in the Joe Wicks challenge, leaning to ride your bike and make yorkshire puddings. Please keep sending in your photos and videos to tapestry.

Its lovely to hear that some of the children are worried they are missing phonics! Read, Write Inc are doing daily phonics that you can access. I have attached a Daily Phonics guidance sheet to help you know which group your child is in and how to access the videos. Please can I ask that you do not start the Read, Write Inc Get Writing books yet. I will let you know when we are all going to start them so that we all start at the same time. I will let you know on the blog when you are to start using them and what activities in the book to complete. Thank you for your support with this. Please message me on tapestry if you are unsure about groups.

I have attached a document of a few apps/websites that I think will be useful and that you will enjoy. The document shows what the app/website is and how to access it.

Oxford Owl is a website school subscribe to and I have set up a username and password so that you can access all the free reading books.

Username:owlsclass2020 password:Owls2020

Why don't you have a look today. Let me know which ones you enjoy.

I have seen lots of people on my road colouring and painting rainbows and putting them in their window to make people smile as they walk past. Maybe you could do this today? I would love to see your rainbows. Thank you to some of you that have shared yours already.

Please keep posting to Tapestry I love seeing what you are doing.

Hope you have a lovely day and stay safe.

Hi Skylarks and parents,

I hope you had a lovely first day completing fun activities and just generally trying to get used to this new, unfamiliar situation. The weather was great again so I hope you managed to spend some family time out in the sunshine.

Today's riddle:

What belongs to you, but other people use it more than you?

Yesterday's riddle answer: Your fingers

Please work through your packs at your own pace, choosing the activities that you do in the morning (maths, comprehension or spelling). In the afternoon, you will complete a project which is explained and links are given on the timetable attachment. If you need any help, please tweet or tweet the work that you have produced as I would love to see what amazing work you are doing at home!

Remember you can learn in many other ways: learning to cook your favourite food, hoovering, washing the dishes, working the washing machine, gardening, etc.

Monday Morning Hello, by Miss Beattie

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 9:51am

Good Morning Robins,

I hope you have been able to enjoy the beautiful sunshine as much as possible this weekend – I too have spent some time in my garden!

I’m sure it feels a little bit strange not coming into school this morning, as I know it has felt this way for me. I am so proud of every single one of you and I know you are going to surprise me with how amazingly you face this new challenge J Remember:

‘You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart… I’ll always be with you.’’ A.A Milne

I want you to enjoy your first week of Home Learning and remember that learning is all around us – Enjoy spending time outdoors where possible, cook, bake, read, play board games, but most importantly… HAVE FUN!

It is so important to stay active (even when stuck indoors)! Why not start each morning with an active PE lesson with Joe Wickes live on YouTube – Just tune into ‘The body Coach TV’ on YouTube at 9am each morning for a fun way to kick-start your day!

Don’t worry about your Home Learning Packs today – but here are a few tasks to ease you into this new style of learning:

  • Times Tables Rock Stars – Your login details are stuck inside your new Home Learning books
  • Reading – Curl up with your favourite book for 20 minute (Maybe you could build a reading ‘den’ – I used to love doing this when I was younger!!)
  • Art – I have saw lots of my neighbours painting pictures of rainbows to put up on their window to make others smile as they walk past. Maybe you could draw a rainbow and put it in your window too?
  • Spend some time in the garden – remember to water your courgette seeds and plant your sunflower!

Mrs Esling also says a big hello! We are both missing you all lots!

Remember to stay safe, stay indoors and keep checking Twitter for more updates J

Love, Miss Beattie and Mrs Esling x

Monday 23rd March, by Mrs Evans

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 9:37am

Monday 23rd March

Good morning my lovely Goldfinches. I hope you all had a restful weekend after a busy week last week.

Lots more has happened in the news so I’ve been chatting to my children about ‘social distancing’ this weekend. This means staying at home with your family and not meeting up with anyone else- even people really close to you like grandparents, best friends and cousins. This is a very strange new thing to do and feels really weird- especially because it was Mother’s Day yesterday. Toby has asked a lot to have friends over to play but I have had to say no each time. Because… like we talked about last week, this is advice from the expert scientists and it is to help us all to keep safe. Remember to keep washing your hands too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9VjeIWLnEg This is the link to our funny handwashing clip!

Today is the start of having a go at doing school jobs at home. This will also be really strange but I’m sure we will get used to it after a little while. Each morning I will blog to share ideas of what you can do to keep our love for learning strong. I will share what I have done with my own children too.

Active time…. Choose 1 of these to try out:

Outside- go for a walk with an adult in your house (staying 2m away from other people) and see how many rainbows you can spot in people’s windows

or trampoline

or make a garden obstacle trail

or Inside-  try out Go Noodle   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2YBT7HYqCbbvzu3kKZ3wnw

School jobs

Spelling

Choose 5 spellings from your diary or the Y3/4 statutory word list and record them in your spelling doodle or make a picture poster to help you remember them. You could even write a test for an adult in your house.

If you do IDL- do a lesson online.

Maths- Time

From now on try to read the clocks in your house as much as possible. Ask adults to ask you what time it will be in …10 mins…30 mins…. How long is it until snack time… outside time… etc.

Find a ‘Telling The Time’ game to play on a tablet or laptop. Have a go at a page from your Home Learning Pack.

Topmarks have a great teaching clock https://www.topmarks.co.uk/time/teaching-clock

and a good game to play to match analogue and digital

https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/116/telling-the-time

Creative time- choose 1 of these to have a go at:

30 day Lego challenge

30 day drawing challenge

Quiet time

Find a quiet spot to curl up with one of the lovely books you chose to take home. My kids hung out on the trampoline today with beanbags, blankets and books!

Relax with your mindfulness jar or some music.

Topic time

Science and Geography: Volcanoes

Use the Natural History Website  to find out about how to make an erupting volcano. This used to be a learning log task and there are so many different, fun ways of doing it…. Cardboard, Lego, cake….

https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-to-make-a-volcano.html

Don’t worry about trying to do all of this in one day… perhaps split it up into researching, collecting things from your house to make it with and then making. There is no rush. Take a photo of your finished volcano as I would love to see it!

Or….

Geography: RIVERS research. Watch Planet Earth Fresh Water on BBC I-Player to help you begin to learn about rivers. As you are watching, you might want to jot down some notes or diagrams to help you remember for the next lesson.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0074sgj

Fresh air

If it is sunny and warm again today then play, play, play outside in your garden! Plant Mr and Mrs Bean and find a warm spot inside on a windowsill for now to help the seeds germinate.

Remember… be kind, be polite and be helpful. More from me tomorrow and enjoy your day today.

From Mrs Evans and a big hello from Mrs Brennan and Mrs O'Marah

from Mrs Powell…

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart…I’ll always be with you.” A.A. Milne.

I am so proud of all the children, enjoy your first day of learning in a different way and remember to plant those sunflower seeds.  Mrs P

Parents/Carers

Please try not to put pressure on yourselves to do too much or for too long. Remember this is new to us all and is quite a daunting thought. All of these tasks are SUGGESTED and not compulsory. The timetable is a guide to help support some structure but doesn’t have to be followed to the minute. Take each day as it comes and share the day timetable with your child(ren). I have uploaded a visual timetable for you to use with your children to help you to choose the activities for the day. They respond so well when they know what is coming next and how long activities will be for. If they end up completely absorbed in something creative/outdoors/practical, then follow their lead.

If it’s sunny and warm be out in your garden with your children- I know I will be as much as possible!

Look after yourselves, Mrs Evans

I hope that you have all had a lovely weekend in the sunshine. The boys have been on their bikes and I have been running behind them trying to keep up! The sun is shining today so when you have done a little bit of work from your pack, go outside and enjoy the fresh air (ask a grown up)

In our house, we are doing a reading comprehension today and painting pictures of rainbows to put up on our Lane to make others smile as they walk past. Maybe you could draw a rainbow and put it in your window too? I am collecting our fury friends today so I will update Twitter with how they have grown. Mrs Elson says a big hello to everyone.

I am thinking about each and every one of you and your families. Keep smiling. blush

I hope you all had a lovely weekend. I am so pleased to see that the sun is shining again ready for a day of positivity and productivity, learning at home.  Please give yourselves time to adjust to a new and very different routine.  Record what you complete on the ‘Activity Log’ (p2) and have lots of fun.

Note: Tomorrow we will have a live Read Write Inc. lesson to watch in addition to playing wonderful phonic games.  You will also be given access to reading books online via a free sign up website.

  • Maths – Can you go on a shape hunt around your house? Can you sort your shapes into 2D (flat) and 3D shapes?

Please complete page 3 in your booklet. In activity one, I would like you to draw a line matching the shape to its partner. I would then like you to circle the odd one out in activity two. Please talk to your adult as you complete the task, using the words below to explain how you know you are right.

circle square rectangle   triangle   cube   cuboid pyramid   sphere   cone

https://youtu.be/2cg-Uc556-Q

  • Mental Arithmetic – Please complete page 19 in your pack. We complete these grids weekly in school so the children should be familiar with how they work. Please ensure that the children write the number 9 in each star before solving the problems.

  • Writing – Where will this bus go next? Can you write sentences to describe where the bus will go?

E.g. The bus is going to the pretty beach and it is full of people.

The busy bus is going to the zoo and to the park.

Please start every sentence with a capital letter and end your sentence with a full stop. Adults – please help your Starling to fix any incorrect letter formation, check for finger spaces and encourage Fred Talking. In Year One, the children need to use their phonic knowledge to sound out words. As long and you can read their writing, this is meeting the expectation for the year.

  • Spellings – Please use P82 in your pack to help you to learn to both read and spell our Year One Common Exception Words’. The children are expected to be able to spell these words by the end of the year. Write your spellings in your yellow jotter book using your best joins.  Adults again, please check for incorrect letter formation.

  • Creative Choice Activity: Please have some fun playing with your toys, sing songs on YouTube, dance, play board games, plant seeds, tell jokes, draw, paint and make your family smile.

Thank you as always for your continued support and please get in touch if I can do anything else to support. Take care, look after each other and keep safe. I will be in touch again tomorrow. Have a wonderful day.

Starlings, I am so proud of you. Keep smiling and keep working hard.

With LOTS of love and best wishes,

Miss Gillam J

Toucans Blog Week beg. 23/3/20

Good morning Toucans! I hope you all had a lovely weekend and are ready to commence your home learning. It is a very strange feeling for me this morning that I’m not able to greet you all personally, remind you to choose your dinner and to settle down to your booster task! On the bright side, at least we know there are no SATs to sit this year so you can simply enjoy learning this week. Remember everything that you will be doing will prepare you for high school.

Take another look at your timetable, paper copy in your folder and I’ll also put it on the blog. However, just do as much as you can. Enjoy spending time with your family, help them wherever you can and remember be Ready, Respectful and Safe!

Use Go Noodle and try Banana, Banana, Meatball again!

Log onto 5-A-Day and have a go at Hula.

Word of the day – deliberate

Every day we will give you a word which you must learn and complete some related tasks with it.

  1. In your home learning book write this word 3 times in your best handwriting.
  2. Specify which word class it is e.g. noun, adjective, pronoun etc.
  3. Find a synonym for this word
  4. Find an antonym for this word
  5. Write it in a super sentence using a fronted adverbial

PE Challenge for the week

How many star jumps can you do in a minute? Can you increase the number you do over the week? Keep a tally in the back of your home learning book.

Maths

Spend 5 – 10 minutes on Times Tables Rock Stars.

Make sure you have completed all of Section One and Two in your Maths CGP Homework book.

Hello Owls , by Mrs Campion

Date: 22nd Mar 2020 @ 7:37pm

Good morning. smiley

I hope you all had a lovely weekend. Wasn't the sunshine wonderful. It is great to be able to enjoy the nice weather. Long may it continue.

This has been a very strange and unsettling time for our children and my main focus for this week is for you and the children to have time to adjust to a new routine. Be kind and give yourself time to adjust to a new way of working. I want to reassure you that for our youngest children 'playing is learning' so enjoy the magic, awe and wonder in their play. The real focus for this week is well being, both physical and mental so read stories, play board games and encourage their creativity. There will be plenty of time for phonics, writing and maths in the future. So, for this week I do not want you to worry about the packs that were sent home and instead enjoy spending tme together, readng lots of wonderful stories, playing with their favourite things at home, drawing, buildng models, playing outdoors, making dens etc.

There are ideas in the pack of practical fun ideas to do at home and I have attached a few more nice ideas. At home, we are looking forward to keeping fit with Joe Wicks daily workout at 9am on youtube. Maybe you could try it this morning!!

Please use tapestry to upload anything you are dong with your child.I would love to see all the lovely things that they are up to.

Thank you as always for your continued support and please get in touch on Tapestry if I can do anything else to support. Take care and keep safe.

I will be in touch again tomorrow. I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Home learning- 23.3.20, by Miss Thwaites

Date: 22nd Mar 2020 @ 7:02pm

Hi everyone,

What a gorgeous weekend it was for the children, I hope you all managed to get plenty of sunshine in the safest way possible. This first week is going to be tough and it is important to look after one another and spent lots of time together as a family! It feels weird for me, the fact I cannot see all your lovely faces on a Monday morning. Remember those letters we wrote to one another in class need to be kept unti you really need them!

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart…I’ll always be with you.” A.A. Milne.

Here’s a  little riddle to get you and your family talking; I will post one a day or a joke.

Riddle: When things go wrong, what can you always count on?

Please find attached a timetable for how you can structure your childs learning throughout the day. It is important that you make sure that you both (home educators and children) are in the right frame of mind for learning. As we are all going through a new experience, we are all here to support one another and it is important that if your child is struggling with anything that you tweet us.

Today, your child should follow the attached timetable for Monday.

Activities for the day:

  • Complete active exercise for example: five a day, going for a walk with your family, yoga, https://www.nhs.uk/10-minute-shake-up/shake-ups
  • Complete unit 12: Decimals, lesson 1. The children will be looking at a new concept of adding and subtracting decimals. The children have already worked with adding and subtracting fractions with the same and different denominators.  Explain to your children that fractions and decimals have a lot in common with each other (where whole numbers are broken into parts making them less than a whole number) e.g. 1/10 is the same as 0.1 (https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/7373-understand-the-value-of-a-digit-in-a-decimal-number/) Work through the first 3 pages of lesson 1 (do not worry if your child does not complete this in one session. Please find the starter picture to ask questions to get them thinking about demials in the links at the bottom of the blog.
  • Complete a few games on TT rockstars https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school
  • Your child can then have time to do something creative of their choice. For example:

Lego, drawing, crafting, music, cooking, baking, coding, painting.

Apps such as: book creator, quiver, tynker and imovie (all free)
  • Lunch time
  • Quiet time after lunch to read, nap, complete a puzzle (ensure this is a time with no electronics).
  • Complete project for History/Geography- For today, get your child to conduct some independent research finding out about how homes have changed over the years, dating back to the Stone Age. Your child can do this however they wish, here are some ideas of how they can present it: Complete a timeline on; publisher, draw your own timeline with drawings of the houses, print out pictures and make a timeline on your carpet. Get your child to think about how the homes have changed over time and to compare to make a list of the similarities and the differences. Here are some useful websites: https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/the-evolution-of-housing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoCZnboThfk
  • Complete your day by having fun, going outside and playing in the garden or going for another walk.

Please ensure that whenever your child is conducting research that is independent that you have checked that they are staying safe online, this is something they are very good at in school. Just mention to them if anything appears that they are uncomfortable with or feel distressed by that they need to alert an adult in the house.

Stay safe and look after each other.

Week beginning 16.3.20, by Miss Thwaites

Date: 16th Mar 2020 @ 2:08pm

Hi everyone,

As you were made aware, parents evenings were cancelled for this week. If you need to speak with me about anything, please feel free to make me aware of anything before or after school.

The children have really delved deep this week in writing and have really discussed the meaning of words and phrases in a poem about Malala. The children will begin to develop writing this week and incorporate what they already know and what they are learning in our topic sessions which are based around the adrift project.

In maths, we are looking at adding and subtracting fractions with the same and different denominators. If any of your children are struggling to complete the homework; please make sure they come to me on a Wednesday lunchtime where children are given the opportunity to complete homework tasks and ask for support.

Homework:

Spellings (see in link attached)

Thank you for your continued support.

Week beginning 16.3.20, by Mrs Evans

Date: 14th Mar 2020 @ 11:05am

This week:

SCIENCE:  Goldfinches enjoyed a fantastic Science workshop. Lots of fun experiments captured all of our interest and we all agreed that the Scientists had a great job!

POETRY:The children were inspired to write their own poems based on Home with some absolutely gorgeous results. Please send a photo of your house in (or e-mail the photo to the office) if you haven't yet done so.

LLANDUDNO: Thank you to all who attended the Llandudno meeting. As Mrs Powell said, we are following the daily guidance on school trips at this time and will update you as soon as we know anything. Any parent/carer who was unable to attend, please don't hesitate to pop in if there are any questions you would like me to answer. Children were sent home with medical forms, cat bag orders and a kit list this week. Please return medical forms to school ASAP and if you are unsure of the date of the Tetanus jab, your GP surgery should be able to tell you if you phone them.

Diaries: please support your child to write the name of the books they are reading into their diaries as this helps us to monitor their progress and choices (this includes school books, free choice books and books from home) We are still aiming for our children to try and read daily for approximately 15 mins and we would still like them to read aloud to an adult for some of their home reads. Thank you for your support with this.

Coming up:

Monday 16th and Wednesday 18th March: Parents evening.

Writing- we will be continuing to explore our new text based on the Home theme and refugees.

Reading- we will go through the reading assessment paper which we completed last week to identify how to improve our answers.

Spelling: words from the Y3/4 spelling list column 4. We  have assessed the  third column and re-assessed misspellings from the first two columns. Your child was given a copy of the Y3/4 list where correct spellings from the first 3 columns have been highlighted. Please support your child to learn any spellings from the first 3 columns which are not highlighted.

Hi Everybody

We have been busy with assessments this week, looking carefully at SATs style questions and the children have worked really hard on these. Next week we will be embarking on our theme of 'Home' exploring the Amazon Rain Forest and comparing it with Delamere Forest. We will be considering the reasons that people may leave their homes and the thoughts and feelings that this would cause. In Maths, we are developing our links between multiplication and division.

Thank you for your continued support with home reading. Remember, three comments in the reading diary equals a raffle ticket! Regular reading is so so important to our children's progress and love of language. Times Table Rockstars is a great way of children becoming speedy with thier tables reall and having fun at the same time smiley

Our spellings are based on contractions, when two root words become one when we remove letters eg can not = can't. The apostrophe stands for the missing letters.

I'll, he'll, can't, shouldn't, couldn't, won't, don't, didn't, haven't.

Please come and see Mrs Elson or myself if you have any queries.

Many thanks

Mrs Rice x

The children are full swing into our new Refugee project in school and are enjoying our new class text, 'Something Else.'

In Literacy, we will continue to explore the story with a real focus on the characters feelings. The children are doing extremely well with their writing. We are having a real focus on writing a sentence with a capital letter and a full stop and the importance of holding the sentence we want to write in our head.

In Maths, we will be using a range of strategies to help us remember our number bonds to 10. We have started to use a number track to help us to add by counting on.

The children will be learning about the story of Paddington linked to our Refugee work and look at where Peru is and what it is like there.

Parents Evening is on Monday and Wednesday. If you think you do not have an appointment please let me know.

Thank you for your continued support.

Week Beginning 16.03.20, by Miss Beattie

Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 3:26pm

Another super week for Robins Class! We particularly enjoyed our Science Workshops on Monday!

In writing, we will continue to explore our new book ‘Silence Seeker’. We will use the text to build our vocabulary and write direct speech between characters. We will then apply our new learning by writing our own interpretation of the opening of the story.

In maths we will be consolidating our understanding of multiplication and divisions by solving various problem solving tasks. We will also recap column method for addition and subtraction and will look at how we can use inverse operations to solve missing box questions.

Our spellings for the test on Friday 20th March will look at words with the –ion suffix:

action, collection, construction, attraction, reaction, invention, injection, subtraction

When practicing your child’s spellings with them, try removing the –ion suffix and focus on learning the root word (e.g. act)

The children are enjoying our 'Naughty Bus' very much and have produced some lovelt writing and pictures about all of his mischief!

Next week, we will be finishing our Naughty Bus story by drawing our own story maps and writing our own version of Naughty Bus.
