Welcome to Goldfinches’ Weekly Blog

The final blog for the class of 2022-2023!

Friday Superstar:  Hannah

Top Table children: Christopher and Nathan

How have we got to the final week and where has this year gone? I would just like to say what a pleasure it has been to see our wonderful Goldfinches grow and mature over the past year. I am so proud of each and every one of them in their journey through the Year 4 curriculum and their own personal development. They are more than ready to fledge up to Skylarks and start their Year 5 adventure but I still want to see them popping in to fill me in on their latest news.

This week:

What a fabulous and diverse week of learning! From more super swimming to gorgeous artwork inspired by Henri Matisse, creative Geography and Art river collages to playing so well in our Everton Academy tournament. All topped off with the Friday take over day!

The final week:

Please remember we finish at 1pm on Thursday 20th July.

Reading books: Please ensure all school reading books are returned.

Reading: The Library Reading Challenge is on once again and it would be lovely to hear how well our children have got on with it over the summer holidays.

Times Tables: Continue to use the websites you love to keep the tables ticking over.

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

PE: Final PE session for Y4 on Monday and cricket on Tuesday. Swimming for the children in Turtles, Seals and Orcas groups on Monday and Tuesday.

Thank you also to all of our lovely Goldfinch parents and families for your support over the past year. I know you will join me in wishing Miss Wilkinson and Mrs Simmonds lots of love and luck in their new jobs next year.

Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing summer.

Mrs Evans, Miss Wilkinson, Miss Nelson and Mrs Simmonds.

Robins Week beg. 17th July, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 13th Jul 2023 @ 6:27pm

Thank you to everyone who attended our Open Evening. It was lovely to see the joy on the children's faces as they shared all their books and work with you. We will be sending home their old books over the next couple of days so if they don't have a rucksack it would be useful to bring in a bag to enable the children to take home their books. Some of their books that they are currrently using will be passed up to their Year 4 class so they can continue to use these next year. It has been lovely to have Miss Charlton working with the children in class this week. This has allowed her to build relationships with the children before September.

We have had another great week of swimming. We will have some more intensive lessons for Robins on Monday and then Tuesday everyone will have their last lesson. An email will be sent out to those that need swim kit in school for both days.

Thank you to everyone for your support with homework this year. The children have been amazing with their reading at home this year, practising their weekly spellings and learning their times tables.

Next week we will be focusing on completing our Ancient Civilisation topic. Although I don't think we will get it finished by the end of term so this will be continued by Miss Charlton in Year 4 and will act as a good transition project for the class.

We will also be finishing of our Art and DT work for this year as well as completing our Maths objectives on Measure and Statistics.

Thank you for your outstanding support this year and I look forward to watching your lovely children continue to bloom in Year 4.

Please feel free to get in touch if there is anything we can help you with,

Mrs Whittingham, Miss Wilkinson (Friday) & Mrs Taylor

Super swimmers this week!

Friday Superstar: Ethen

Top Table: Lydia and Lexi

Swimming:  this has been so successful so far! All the children have impressed me so much with their enthusiasm, courage and perseverance. I am so proud! Swimming will continue for Year 4 on Wednesday and Thursday for some of the children and Friday for the whole class. Please continue to send a swim kit in to school.

Friday 14th (Pupil take over day)- Non Uniform day in return for £2 donation. Please remember your child will also have PE and swimming on this day so ensure they wear/bring suitable footwear.

This week we have:

Loved swimming, have been excellent listeners and have made such lovely progress already. On Wednesday we enjoyed working with Mrs Campion as part of our transition to Year 5. Thursday afternoon showed some budding chefs as we learned to chop and slice safely using the bridge method. We made some delicious Greek Salads! We have used our super knowledge of decimals to help us learn about money and solve money problems.

Next week we will:

Writing: Write our own explanations and use computing to complete a glossary.

Spellings: We will work on our personal spellings in class but no more spellings will be sent home this year.

Reading homework: Keep up with the 10 minutes a day target.

Please have a good root around at home to search out any school books so we have time to sort them ready for next term.

Maths homework: Continuing to play a game on the Maths Frame Multiplication Check will continue to help build their fluency and to end year 4 and begin year 5 with as much confidence as possible.

Robins week beg. 10th July, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 6th Jul 2023 @ 5:42pm

Wow! What a week we have had with the pool on site! The children have loved their swimming lessons and have showed both courage and perseverance. Some of the children have already met the expectations for the end of Key Stage 2. Next week, we will regroup the children based on how they have done this week and we will let you know when they will have their next swim session.

Please remember to read with your child for 10 - 15 mins daily and record in diary if possible. Also take a look at their reading target which is on a sticker in their diary, some children may have the same target for a few weeks to work on. This term we will be mainly focusing on vocabulary development.

Spellings for next week will continue to include words from the Statutory Year 3/4 word list. These spellings are hard and often don't link to any of the patterns that we have already covered this year. Therefore we have been looking at different strategies to help us to learn them e.g. looking for smaller words within the word to remember, looking for double letters, drawing around the word, drawing images to help us remember how to spell tricky parts of the word etc.

perhaps, popular, potatoes, promise, quarter, recent, regular, reign

Spelling quiz next week will be on Friday 14th July.

In Maths we are currently working on Telling the Time to the nearest minute on an analogue clock and reading the time on a digital clock. Can they read the time to the nearest hour? half hour? quarter to? quarter past? in 5 minute intervals? in 1 minute intervals? What time do they get up at? What time do they leave for school? What time does the school day end? Asking lots of questions like these about the time throughout the day would be beneficial.

It would be useful to play these games at home and to discuss the time.

Remember to encourage your child to have a go at the spelling and multiplication games suggested below.

https://ictgames.com/littleBirdSpelling/

Use this website below to revise x2, x5, x10, x3, x4 and to focus on learning x8. The children have a mixed times tables sheet for homework this week.

https://www.timestables.co.uk/

PE days for this half term will be Monday and Friday. All children will have a swim lesson on Tuesday 11th July.

We will email to let you know if your child will require an extra session on Wednesday 12th/Thursday 13th July if they have not met the National Curriculum expectations for Swimming.

RE - we will be finding out about Hinduism

Music - we will be listening and appraising different types of music, playing percussion instruments and learning to sing a variety of new songs.

Computing - we will be finding out about how computers work and using IPads and Laptops to record our findings.

DT - we will be exploring structures and making our own

Art - We will also be learning about some famous artists - William Kentridge, Georges Seurat and Pable Picasso and creating our own pieces of work based on the individual style of these artists.

Our new History and Geography Topic will focus on Ancient Civilisations.

Welcome to Goldfinches’ Weekly Blog

Super sports this week.

Friday Superstar: Archie

Top Table: Hannah and Chloe

Move up morning: On Tuesday next week, Goldfinches will become Skylarks for the morning. They will come to Goldfinches’ classroom as usual to register then go and spend the rest of the morning with the lovely Miss Beattie.

Swimming: In the week beginning 3rd July, Goldfinches will all be swimming daily in our pop up pool. They must have a swimming cap to swim (as I discovered when I forgot to send my son into school with one on his first day swimming!!) The office have some in stock to buy. I would recommend plaiting long hair and removing earrings before school to ensure speedy changing and maximum time in the pool.

This week we have:

Worked brilliantly together in Sports day- we supported each other and got into the spirit of a bit of competitiveness. We have worked incredibly hard on our assessments (and enjoyed the extra playtime and brain break time within these). We have completed our learning about Refugees within our Home topic with some thoughtful reflections.

Next week we will:

Writing: Continue to read Blue John as inspiration for our own explanation writing.

Spellings: homophone words: words which sound the same but have different meanings and different spellings.

Words to learn at home: herd, heard, threw, through, to, too, two, blue, blew, their, they’re, there

Reading homework: I am really impressed with how the children are choosing such a wide range of books to read in quiet reading time. One of my favourite times of the day is chatting about which books the children have enjoyed and having a 1:1 read. Please help to support this developing love of books and reading at home by listening to and chatting about your child’s reading books daily and signing their diary.

Maths: We will continue our new unit on angles, triangles and rectangles.

Times tables: We are continuing to work on our times tables to ensure we are able to recall as many as we can fluently before we move into Year 5.

Items from home reminder: there have been some items from home being brought in to school including bracelets and wrist bands. Please ensure these are kept at home so they don’t end up being lost/taken in school and causing distractions and fall outs. Thank you for your support in this.

Welcome to this week's Starlings class Blog. What a fantastic time we had in Bewilderwood.  The children were all impeccably behaved and I could not have been prouder of them all.

The children all had an amazing time competing in events on Sports Day and the rain certainly did not dampen our spirits.

I have left these links up on this week's blog as they remain fun games for the children to play

Odd and Bob

Phonics Frogs

word pairs

Our RWI lessons start promptly at 9 am.  If you can drop your child off as near to 8.45 as possible it would be very beneficial as we have activities before the class registration.

The children will continue to bring home a Read Write Inc book, a book bag book and a bedtime story each week. This provides them with a variety of familiar, new and challenging texts to read. Bedtime storybooks are to be enjoyed with an adult. Reading TO the children ensures that they experience the magic of a story coming to life and have a purpose and love of reading.

Please check your child’s diary to find out which group they are in, which sounds they have learnt that week and which books they have in their book bag.  Each time they move to a new group they will receive a RWI bookmark.  On this bookmark are the ‘red’ words practised in that group.  These words inform our spelling quizzes and regular practice supports fluency and confidence in writing.

On the class page, I have uploaded three new files named Set 1, Set 2 and Set 3.  These contain the QR codes for all the sounds.  Each video is about ten minutes long and can be viewed by your child independently.  Please check your child's bookbag on a Friday to see which new sounds they learned that week and use the videos to support their learning.

Writing

toys in space.JPG

Our new class text is 'Toys in Space' By Mini Grey.

This wonderful story starts with a summer night when the toys were left outside. . . . For the very first time, the Wonderdoll, the helpful wind-up robot, the thoughtful green dinosaur, and the rest of their plucky gang lie in the grass, gazing up at the stars. But one star seems brighter than the rest. As it grows bigger and bigger, the toys realize it may not be a star at all! Soon they're venturing into the unknown, travelling by spaceship, where they meet a lonely alien in need of help and some friends.  This wonderful story will inspire us to write our own version of the story

In maths, we will be exploring money.  It is really beneficial if your child can pay for small items in shops using coins so they are familiar with the values of money and are aware of the different denominations

RELIGION

In religion, we will be learning about how Muslims express new beginnings.

Robins Week Beg. 19th June, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 15th Jun 2023 @ 5:53pm

Remember Sports Day is on Wednesday 21st June at 1pm. Children to wear PE uniform to school on the day. Please have sun cream applied, sunhat and water bottle as usual. Parents are very welcome to come along and please bring your camping chairs/picnic mats!

The children are looking forward to our trip to the World Museum in Liverpool on Thursday 22nd June. Our focus will be Ancient Civilisations but we will also enjoy a tour of the aquarium which ties in nicely with our English topics.

Therefore we have been looking at different strategies to help us to learn them e.g. looking for smaller words within the word to remember, looking for double letters, drawing around the word, drawing images to help us remember how to spell tricky parts of the word etc.

earth, eight, eighth, exercise, famous, favourite, fruit, group

Spelling quiz next week will be on Friday 23rd June

In Maths we have started our unit on Money so it would be useful to play these games at home and to discuss money problems with your child. Make sure they know the value of each coin and note, can they use different coins to make 50p, 57p etc. Can they add costs of items and give change?

RWI

Starlings' class have been phenomenal this week.  They have lived and breathed phonics and I could not be prouder of them all.  Thank you for all your support.

Below I have put links to some fun games that the children have enjoyed playing in class these past couple of weeks.

No spellings will be sent out this half term.  Instead, your child has real and alien words to practice at home.  This ensures the children have lots of exposure in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check.  More will be added to your child's folder but please don't feel you have to review every word each night as it will be too much for them.  I would recommend no more than eight at a time and mix them up daily.

Writing

toys in space.JPG

In maths, we will be looking at division, fractions and shape.

RELIGION

In religion, we will be learning about how Muslims express new beginnings.

PE

Our PE days have reverted to  Wednesdays and Fridays. Please come to school wearing the appropriate PE kit- White t-shirt, black/blue plain hoodie and tracksuit bottoms or shorts, hair tied back and earrings removed or covered with own plasters.

Words to learn for Friday 26th May: illegal, illogical, illiterate, unkind, unclear, incomplete, incorrect, impolite, disagree, dislike

Reading: we will practice answering inference questions about our new text.

Reading homework: We are enjoying choosing from a wide range of books within the classroom – both fiction and non-fiction. Please support your child to continue to read at home for 10-15 minutes daily.

Maths: We will continue our focus on solving fractions problems by using our increasing knowledge of times tables to help us and develop an understanding of the link between fractions and decimal numbers.

Times tables: The National Times Table test is getting closer now so please continue to support your child to practice their fluency and speed in the different times tables.

We are continuing to work on our times tables every day by using games, online games, worksheets and tests in class. Look out for paper copies of activities and games I’m sending home to support with recall and fluency.

I would highly recommend supporting your child to play a game on the Maths Frame Multiplication Check at least once a day to help build their confidence and fluency. 25 questions with a 6 second gap between each one can be tricky and the more they practise, the more confident they will be.
