Skylarks: Blog items

Date: 19th Apr 2020 @ 3:10pm

Good morning Skylarks and parents,

I hope you are all well and enjoying your afternoon creative projects. Please keep tweeting your learning so that I can see what you have all been up too. @LostockGralamPr

I hope you have managed to begin working through some of the addition and subtraction questions I attached to yesterday’s blog. You can continue to do this daily as this is a really good way to practise what you already know. Today could you have a go at completing the comprehension text that I put in your home learning packs. This would be a great way to refresh your minds of understanding the text that you are reading as you are all so brilliant at this.

As you are aware some online learning platforms have been released over the weekend. Please try and attempt the following as a bit of revision:

Recap your knowledge of multiples and factors https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zfchpg8

Why not recap your knowledge of expanded noun phrases https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4d6t39 find an old picture of a place or just look outside your window, describe some of the things you can see and come up with some different expanded noun phrases.

Today’s riddle: Mary has four daughters, and each of her daughters has a brother — how many children does Mary have?

Yesterday’s answer: A towel

Message from Mrs Powell:

I love this and I love all of your smiles! When you think kind things, you spread that kindness for everyone to see.  Tell someone special, three of your kind thoughts.

“If you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” – Roald Dahl

Please continue to stay safe and not over work yourselves as it is very important to make sure that you are mentally well.

Date: 19th Apr 2020 @ 3:09pm

Hi everyone,

I hope you got on well yesterday with trying to get into the home learning routine again. Just keep reminding yourselves that you are all doing a great job in such a rare situation.

Today, continue working through the pages in your booklets for maths learning on decimals. It would be useful for you to spend a bit of time recapping some of the learning that you have already done. For example, looking back at addition and subtraction questions. In this blog I will attach a document that has some reasoning questions practicing addition and subtractions. Please have a go at doing some of these in your work book. Do a few a day before completing your maths learning on decimals.

Today’s riddle: What gets wetter as it dries?

Yesterday’s answer: Candle

Message from Mrs Powell:

What could you read today?  It could be singing songs or reading something about a sport you love; things to read are everywhere.  Go on - read anything!

Date: 19th Apr 2020 @ 3:07pm

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a relaxing couple of weeks off and are all looking after yourselves. Hasn’t the weather been so kind to us? I hope you have all managed to spend time outside in your garden or completing your daily exercise. Today would have been the day you would have been returning to school for the Summer term and I am very sad that we are still not all together yet, but I am still hopeful that it will not be long until we are reunited.

It has been lovely to see all the different learning you have been doing at home with your families and I am sure you are all showing your parents and siblings what fantastic learners you all are.

For today you should ease yourselves back into your home learning. I would like you to spend the morning looking at your timestables and going on times tables rockstars or completing your packs of flash cards. Complete some reading and share what you have been reading with a family member.

Please see the weekly timetable attached to this blog along with other documents that may be useful to you this week.

I know that it is getting very difficult and still feeling strange not being able to see certain family members and friends but it is very important that we still follow these guidelines. I am also missing my family and friends. I am beginning to create a list of what things I want to do when this all blows over. Could you create your own list maybe?

In my previous blogs I gave you a riddle each day to complete and I will continue to do so.

Today’s riddle: “I’m tall when I’m young and I’m short when I’m old. What am I?”

Message from Mrs Powell:

What have you learnt from someone around you? On our daily walk, I found out that my daughter is an expert on windfarms. What could you learn from someone?  What could you teach someone?

"When you talk, you are only repeating something you know. But if you listen, you may learn something new.” – Dalai Lama

Take care and look after each other.

Easter Holidays Week 2, by Miss Thwaites

Date: 11th Apr 2020 @ 3:29pm

Hello everyone,

What a gorgeous week it has been for our Easter holidays, I hope you have all been managing to get into the garden and enjoy the glorious sunshine we have been having. I have certainly used this weather to my advantage by finishing off my outdoor area at home. I had to tackle some VERY big roots and raise the beds ready to grow some plants and vegetables.

Why don't you tweet me @LostockGralamPr some of the things you have been up too?

Even though the sun is lovely, please make sure you are safe by wearing suncream!

For your second week of Easter I will attach a document that has some ideas of things you can do. This is the same document uploaded in last weeks blog.

I am missing you all so much and cannot wait until we are back in school together again.

Take care and look after each other!

Easter holidays week 1, by Miss Thwaites

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 5:22pm

Hello Skylarks and parents,

Well done with all the successful learnin gyou have completed over the past two weeks. It has been lovely to see what you have all been up to and it would be great for you to continue to tweet us with pictures of what you have been doing.

Even though these past two weeks have been really tough and probably feel more negative than positive, please think of 3 positive things you have done or achieved and hold on to them tight!

Parents, you have well and truly earned yourself two weeks off! I am in awe of you all how you have all rose to this challenge and tackled it remarkably well! You are all superstars!

Over the next two weeks, I will write a blog per week to keep you up to date. As you will be in lockdown during the next two weeks, it is not what we quite expected or hoped for over the Easter period. Attached are some different activities you could complete over the next two weeks.

The weather forecast looks nice and warm for the next two weeks so hopefully the sunshine will bring you some positivity and hope! Make sure you continue to follow the government guidelines and keep yourselves safe!

I know myself and Mrs Hulse are missing our fabulous Skylarks so much and we cannot wait to be back together again soon!

Continue tweeting us over the Easter break @LostockGralamPr, I love seeing what you are all up too!

Remember, we made letters for one another to support each other, if you have still not opened it well done and see if you can wait until you are feeling really sad or lonely as this will really help you to get through this difficult time.

I know you will be really missing friends and family, as I know I am! Keep smiling and keep shining Skylarks!

Stay safe and take care!

Home learning Week 2- 3.4.20, by Miss Thwaites

Date: 29th Mar 2020 @ 4:24pm

Hi Skylarks and parents,

Wow, well done you have completed two full weeks of learning at home. How have you found it? Hard, exciting, weird? Parents, I cannot thank you enough for all the time you have dedicated to making sure that your child is still continuing their learning. You have now earnt yourself a 2 week holiday. Today, we would have been breaking up for the Easter holidays, a time that should be spent having fun with family and doing exciting things that you love. As we are still experiencing a lockdown, it makes it virtually impossible to go out exploring and completing activities outside of your home. Please make sure you are still completing a walk a day to get some fresh air and to help you to remain hopeful and positive!

I have been continuing to draw and completing boxercise exercises to ensure that I am staying physically and mentally healthy!

Yesterday's riddle answer: A stamp

If you do go out for your daily walk, please remember to not touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands! Remember to wash your hands after you have been outside to stop the spread of this nasty virus.

Message from Mrs Powell:

Good morning children, It may not feel like it but we are all very lucky to have each other. What are you going to do today to make it different from yesterday, we never get today again. What will you do today? How will you use it? Will you draw a picture? Do some PE? Help someone at home? I’m keeping a diary so that I can remember how I made each day count, could you? Stay safe and remember this: “I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”

“You will never have this day again. So make it count”

Take care Skylarks!

Date: 29th Mar 2020 @ 4:09pm

Hi Skylarks and parents,

What books have you read so far? Can you tweet me which books you enjoying at the moment? I love to hear your reviews on the books you are reading. Make sure you are reading everyday, it can be anything it doesn't have to be a book!

Today's riddle: What travels around the world but stays in one spot?

Yesterday's answer: David!

Keep active at home why don't you complete an excercise challenge for 30 days?? You can find these on the internet!

Message from Mrs Powell:

Dear children, Are you getting a bit grumpy? It is all very strange, before you say anything when you are cross, say to yourself would I want someone to speak to me like that? Remember we all get grumpy and that is OK!

“Treat others the way you want to be treated.”

Thank you for working extremely hard!

Home learning Week 2- 1.4.20, by Miss Thwaites

Date: 29th Mar 2020 @ 4:01pm

Hi Skylarks and Parents,

I hope you are keeping yourselves busy and entertained. I know this week is going to feel much weirder than it did last week. Spend time today reflecting on yourself and your main qualities. I want you to create a list of ten adjectives that best describe you!

I bet you are all really beginning to miss your friends and some of your family. Why not chat to them online or give them a phone call! I’ve been missing my family and my dog Ruby! Here’s us speaking on FaceTime!

Ruby didn’t say much she just pulled silly faces on the screen laugh

Today's riddle: David’s parents have three sons: Snap, Crackle and…?

Yesterday's answer: Your age!

Continue to work through your learning packs and make sure your learning is not a chore and it is enjoyable by spending time learning something new that is of your choice.

Message from Mrs Powell:

Dear children, Where do you dream of going? What do you want to do? Just because we can’t visit new places doesn’t mean we can’t think about what we would like to do and where we could like to visit. This saying also means you can do great things. What great thing can do today? This can be anything, big or small it is still an achievement.

“You’re off to great places. Today is your day.” – Dr. Seuss

Missing you all my amazing SKYLARKS!!

Home learning Week 2- 31.3.20, by Miss Thwaites

Date: 29th Mar 2020 @ 3:41pm

Hi Skylarks and parents,

I hope you have expanded your vocabulary knowledge during your history and geography research lesson yesterday!

Today's riddle: What goes up but never comes back down?

Yesterday's answer: nine!

Continue working through your learning packs and choose what you want to work more on and focus on that today.

Please keep up with your timestables, here is my challenge to you:

By the time we get back to school, I want you to have learnt all your times tables up to 12 x12!! Challenge yourself and learn them in different fun ways other than just TT Rockstars.

CREATE SOME FLASH CARDS. Have the times table written on the front and the answer on the back. If you get it right put into a pile. If you get it wrong put in a different pile. If it takes you longer than 10 seconds to answer put it in a middle pile. Keep repeating! Repetition makes you remember things!

See attached some cards that are already pre-made.

Message from Mrs Powell:

Dear children, When we do something do we say we can’t do it? Try and change that today and tell yourself you can do anything. Remember you are amazing and if you believe in yourself you can do anything!

“ I think I can. I know I can.”

Take care.

Date: 29th Mar 2020 @ 2:57pm

Hi Skylarks and parents,

I hope you all managed to have a relaxing weekend, spending and enjoying time together. I am missing you all so much! I hope you are all continuing to work hard- like you do everyday when you are in school. Remember:

I hope you have been enjoying your creative time and spending time doing the things that you love and enjoy to do. I thought I would have a go at drawing again (something I used to love to do as a child). I don't really get much time to do drawings so I have loved having a go. Here is one I did over the weekend of my dog Ruby:

HAVE A GO YOURSELF AND TWEET YOUR CREATIONS!!

This week, please continue to follow the weekly timetable. I am going to attach all the things you will need to complete all your tasks this week.

Please continue to work through your learning packs choosing if you would like to do maths, comprehension or spellings in the morning. If you are needing any help with these things please just send a tweet.

Good luck with your second week of home learning and remember to have fun together and not get too bogged down with working every minute of the day.

Here is my riddle for this week: If two’s company, and three’s a crowd, what are four and five?

Answer for Friday's riddle: Trouble

Well done if you are having a go at these!!

Message from Mrs Powell:

Dear children, This is now your second week, you have shown how great you are, what will you do today, how do you show how clever and strong you are each day?

“With the new day come new thoughts and new strengths.”

Stay safe everyone!

Date: 24th Mar 2020 @ 5:25pm

Hi Skylarks class and parents,

It's Friday! You have made it to the end of your first week of learning at home, did you enjoy it? Did it feel a bit different? I hope you have managed to work through parts of your home learning packs and completed different learning of your choice so far. For today, continue working through these packs and start winding down for the weekend. This may be a difficult weekend as you should stay in your homes and can't socialise in the normal way you are used too.

Why not:

Design and make a new game

Draw a picture of your family

Do something new and exciting!

Today's riddle: What is easy to get into but hard to get out of?

Yesterday's answer: an envelope

Message from Mrs Powell:

“The most wonderful thing about Tiggers is, I’m the only one.” Tigger

Good morning children! This morning I want you to think about how special and unique you are, talk to someone in your house about all the special qualities that make you unique. What about the people you live with, what makes them special, why don’t you tell them!

I have enjoyed spending time with our family dog Ruby!

Have a lovely weekend and I will be in touch with what you need to do next week.

Stay safe and look after each other!

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all looking after yourselves. Have a look at completing Joe Wickes live PE session at 9am. Search into youtube 'The Body Coach TV'. They have been great the past few days and they have certainly made me work hard so give it a try and challenge yourselves this morning. Continue working through your packs and completing the project work which is listed on the time table posted on Tuesday's blog.

Today's riddle: What begins with an E but only has one letter?

Yesterday's answer: Seven

Message from Mrs Powell:

“It never hurts to keep looking for sunshine.” Eeyore

Dear children, I have a challenge for everyone to do in your house. Can you think of three lovely things to happen each day, then either tell them to someone in your house or write them down? I’m going to do this and hopefully we will all try and find our own sunshine.

Take care everyone and look after each other. Remember to be: Ready, Respectful and Safe.

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 11:18am

Hi Skylarks and parents,

I hope you had a lovely first day completing fun activities and just generally trying to get used to this new, unfamiliar situation. The weather was great again so I hope you managed to spend some family time out in the sunshine.

Today's riddle:

What belongs to you, but other people use it more than you?

Yesterday's riddle answer: Your fingers

Please work through your packs at your own pace, choosing the activities that you do in the morning (maths, comprehension or spelling). In the afternoon, you will complete a project which is explained and links are given on the timetable attachment. If you need any help, please tweet or tweet the work that you have produced as I would love to see what amazing work you are doing at home!

Remember you can learn in many other ways: learning to cook your favourite food, hoovering, washing the dishes, working the washing machine, gardening, etc.

Message from Mrs Powell:

“When you see someone putting on his Big Boots, you can be pretty sure that an Adventure is going to happen.” Winnie the Pooh

Dear children, We have all started on a strange adventure, I wonder what we will learn to do over the next few months? I think you will find that your parents are the best teachers! Enjoy any activity you do for the first time, we are going to make bread in my house!

Thank you for your continued suppport.

Date: 22nd Mar 2020 @ 7:02pm

Hi everyone,

What a gorgeous weekend it was for the children, I hope you all managed to get plenty of sunshine in the safest way possible. This first week is going to be tough and it is important to look after one another and spent lots of time together as a family! It feels weird for me, the fact I cannot see all your lovely faces on a Monday morning. Remember those letters we wrote to one another in class need to be kept unti you really need them!

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart…I’ll always be with you.” A.A. Milne.

Here’s a  little riddle to get you and your family talking; I will post one a day or a joke.

Riddle: When things go wrong, what can you always count on?

Please find attached a timetable for how you can structure your childs learning throughout the day. It is important that you make sure that you both (home educators and children) are in the right frame of mind for learning. As we are all going through a new experience, we are all here to support one another and it is important that if your child is struggling with anything that you tweet us.

Today, your child should follow the attached timetable for Monday.

Activities for the day:

  • Complete active exercise for example: five a day, going for a walk with your family, yoga, https://www.nhs.uk/10-minute-shake-up/shake-ups
  • Complete unit 12: Decimals, lesson 1. The children will be looking at a new concept of adding and subtracting decimals. The children have already worked with adding and subtracting fractions with the same and different denominators.  Explain to your children that fractions and decimals have a lot in common with each other (where whole numbers are broken into parts making them less than a whole number) e.g. 1/10 is the same as 0.1 (https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/7373-understand-the-value-of-a-digit-in-a-decimal-number/) Work through the first 3 pages of lesson 1 (do not worry if your child does not complete this in one session. Please find the starter picture to ask questions to get them thinking about demials in the links at the bottom of the blog.
  • Complete a few games on TT rockstars https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school
  • Your child can then have time to do something creative of their choice. For example:

Lego, drawing, crafting, music, cooking, baking, coding, painting.

Apps such as: book creator, quiver, tynker and imovie (all free)
  • Lunch time
  • Quiet time after lunch to read, nap, complete a puzzle (ensure this is a time with no electronics).
  • Complete project for History/Geography- For today, get your child to conduct some independent research finding out about how homes have changed over the years, dating back to the Stone Age. Your child can do this however they wish, here are some ideas of how they can present it: Complete a timeline on; publisher, draw your own timeline with drawings of the houses, print out pictures and make a timeline on your carpet. Get your child to think about how the homes have changed over time and to compare to make a list of the similarities and the differences. Here are some useful websites: https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/the-evolution-of-housing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoCZnboThfk
  • Complete your day by having fun, going outside and playing in the garden or going for another walk.

Please ensure that whenever your child is conducting research that is independent that you have checked that they are staying safe online, this is something they are very good at in school. Just mention to them if anything appears that they are uncomfortable with or feel distressed by that they need to alert an adult in the house.

Stay safe and look after each other.

Hi everyone,

As you were made aware, parents evenings were cancelled for this week. If you need to speak with me about anything, please feel free to make me aware of anything before or after school.

The children have really delved deep this week in writing and have really discussed the meaning of words and phrases in a poem about Malala. The children will begin to develop writing this week and incorporate what they already know and what they are learning in our topic sessions which are based around the adrift project.

In maths, we are looking at adding and subtracting fractions with the same and different denominators. If any of your children are struggling to complete the homework; please make sure they come to me on a Wednesday lunchtime where children are given the opportunity to complete homework tasks and ask for support.

Hi everyone,

The children have had a brilliant final week before half-term creating their plans for their final piece of writing for Arthur and the Golden rope.  After half-term, the children will be starting to write their new piece and complete them by the end of the week and have time allocated to edit and improve their pieces of work.

In maths, the children have been looking at short division working to divide up to 4 digit numbers by one digit. The children will come back after half-term and begin to look at fractions.

A note was given last week about all the homework in the CGP maths books that the children should have completed. Over half-term, if your child hasn't made a start to page 24, this will need to be done for the first Friday back in school.

Please make sure your children are continuing to go on TT rockstars as they are realising how important it is in our multiplication and division units, to know their times tables.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for attending our class worship, the children had a really enjoyable time sharing their knowledge with you. There was such a great atmosphere and sense of pride when you all came to look at your children's books.

This week the children have been doing some fantastic pieces of writing, they have planned and written a recount of Arthur's journey through the sea using relative clauses, expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials to link the paragraphs together. Next week, we will be planning our own fantasy story using our book 'Arthur and the Golden rope' to guide us.

In maths, the children have been grappling with long multiplication and putting it into practice. We will continue to rehearse this for the remainder of the week, before moving on to short division next week.

A note will be coming home this week to remind the children of the maths homework they should have completed by the 14.2.20. Therefore, I won't be setting anymore homework this week but if the children would like to get a headstart before the homework for half-term then they will need to complete page 24.

Thank you for your continued support.

Hi everyone,

What a fantastic week Skylarks class have had, they had such a brilliant time learning all about the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and the Jutes at Weaver Hall museum. The children have been looking at where they come from and reasons behind why they migrated.

In maths, the children are coming the the end of looking at perimeter and area. Next week, the children will be loooking at multiplication using the written method and then division using the short written method.

Our class worship will take place on Wednesday 5th February at 2:30pm. Please come along to listen and celebrate your childrens learning that has taken place throughout year 5 so far.

Next Friday, the children will take part in an intra football competition in the afternoon with year 6. Please make sure all your children have suitable kits.

Hi everyone,

Skylarks have had an exciting week learning about perimeter and area in maths. As there homework for this week, instead of doing their homework book, I would like them to tell define what perimeter and area are to their friends and family. Next week, we will be continuing to look at this and then going back into our multiplication and division; starting with multiplying 2 digit numbers.

The children had two visitors this week, who came in to speak to them about managing finance. There was a 'grandfather' figure who told them a story about his grandchildren and how he needed to save, estimate and total costs to buy all his grandchildren things that they wanted. The children really got on board and involved with this and it was fantastic to see their maths skills playing a big part in this.

In writing, we have been looking at new, unfamiliar language and using dictionaries and iPads to decifer what the words mean. The children have been introduced to their new book and have begun to predict what the book may be about and the plot of the story. They will be using expanded noun phrases and relative clauses to describe the main character 'Arthur'.

Homework:

Spelling (I am sending home spellings that we have already looked at this term, but I feel there is still a gap so would like to revisit them).

Maths (Tell a family member or friend what perimeter and area are and how you calculate them).

Hi everyone,

Skylarks have had a fantastic week completing their work on The Lost Happy Endings. This week, they have started to look at their new book 'Arthur and the Golden Rope' which will link nicely to our Vikings topic work.

In maths, the children have been looking at using factors to grapple with them to secure their understanding of factors and prime numbers. They have also been looking at squared numbers and cube numbers. In the following week, we will be looking at using the inverse operations and looking at multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.

Over the next few weeks, the children will be mapping out which countries the Vikings came from and where they migrated too. We will be delving deeper by looking at the counties that they moved too in the UK. The children will be looking into the reasons as to why the Vikings migrated.

Cheshire Fire Service will be coming into school Friday 17th January in the afternoon to talk to children about how to keep safe and what to do if a fire was to occur.

Homework:

Reading- please keep up with the reading at least three times a week
