Welcome to Goldfinches’ Weekly Blog

The final blog for the class of 2022-2023!

Friday Superstar:  Hannah

Top Table children: Christopher and Nathan

How have we got to the final week and where has this year gone? I would just like to say what a pleasure it has been to see our wonderful Goldfinches grow and mature over the past year. I am so proud of each and every one of them in their journey through the Year 4 curriculum and their own personal development. They are more than ready to fledge up to Skylarks and start their Year 5 adventure but I still want to see them popping in to fill me in on their latest news.

This week:

What a fabulous and diverse week of learning! From more super swimming to gorgeous artwork inspired by Henri Matisse, creative Geography and Art river collages to playing so well in our Everton Academy tournament. All topped off with the Friday take over day!

The final week:

Please remember we finish at 1pm on Thursday 20th July.

Reading books: Please ensure all school reading books are returned.

Reading: The Library Reading Challenge is on once again and it would be lovely to hear how well our children have got on with it over the summer holidays.

Times Tables: Continue to use the websites you love to keep the tables ticking over.

PE: Final PE session for Y4 on Monday and cricket on Tuesday. Swimming for the children in Turtles, Seals and Orcas groups on Monday and Tuesday.

Thank you also to all of our lovely Goldfinch parents and families for your support over the past year. I know you will join me in wishing Miss Wilkinson and Mrs Simmonds lots of love and luck in their new jobs next year.

Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing summer.

Mrs Evans, Miss Wilkinson, Miss Nelson and Mrs Simmonds.

Friday 14th (Pupil take over day)- Non Uniform day in return for £2 donation. Please remember your child will also have PE and swimming on this day so ensure they wear/bring suitable footwear.

Loved swimming, have been excellent listeners and have made such lovely progress already. On Wednesday we enjoyed working with Mrs Campion as part of our transition to Year 5. Thursday afternoon showed some budding chefs as we learned to chop and slice safely using the bridge method. We made some delicious Greek Salads! We have used our super knowledge of decimals to help us learn about money and solve money problems.

Next week we will:

Welcome to Goldfinches’ Weekly Blog

Super sports this week.

Friday Superstar: Archie

Top Table: Hannah and Chloe

Move up morning: On Tuesday next week, Goldfinches will become Skylarks for the morning. They will come to Goldfinches’ classroom as usual to register then go and spend the rest of the morning with the lovely Miss Beattie.

Swimming: In the week beginning 3rd July, Goldfinches will all be swimming daily in our pop up pool. They must have a swimming cap to swim (as I discovered when I forgot to send my son into school with one on his first day swimming!!) The office have some in stock to buy. I would recommend plaiting long hair and removing earrings before school to ensure speedy changing and maximum time in the pool.

This week we have:

Worked brilliantly together in Sports day- we supported each other and got into the spirit of a bit of competitiveness. We have worked incredibly hard on our assessments (and enjoyed the extra playtime and brain break time within these). We have completed our learning about Refugees within our Home topic with some thoughtful reflections.

Next week we will:

Writing: Continue to read Blue John as inspiration for our own explanation writing.

Spellings: homophone words: words which sound the same but have different meanings and different spellings.

Words to learn at home: herd, heard, threw, through, to, too, two, blue, blew, their, they’re, there

Reading homework: I am really impressed with how the children are choosing such a wide range of books to read in quiet reading time. One of my favourite times of the day is chatting about which books the children have enjoyed and having a 1:1 read. Please help to support this developing love of books and reading at home by listening to and chatting about your child’s reading books daily and signing their diary.

Maths: We will continue our new unit on angles, triangles and rectangles.

Times tables: We are continuing to work on our times tables to ensure we are able to recall as many as we can fluently before we move into Year 5.

If this link doesn’t work on a tablet, try googling Maths Frame Y4 Multiplication check.

PE: Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Items from home reminder: there have been some items from home being brought in to school including bracelets and wrist bands. Please ensure these are kept at home so they don’t end up being lost/taken in school and causing distractions and fall outs. Thank you for your support in this.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us via the office if you would like to discuss anything about your child.  admin@lostockgralam.cheshire.sch.uk     01606668270

Welcome to Goldfinches’ Weekly Blog

Super focus and concentration during the assessments.

Friday Superstar: Evan

Top Table: Jacob H and George

 This week we have:

… worked so hard on all of our assessments showing great perseverance and concentration. Enjoyed the rehearsals for Matilda and sang beautifully in the Christingle service.

Next week we will:

Matilda: Performances on Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday evening. Costumes: School uniform on the bottom half (with tights or leggings under skirts for girls) and school shoes for all. Please send in a named white shirt if you have one. (School has some we can provide but any support in this will be appreciated) School will provide a tie for each child. Girls’ hair must be neatly plaited, tied back or in a bun please.

Writing: we will continue to write in the role of another character to develop our diary writing skills.

Reading: We will learn to answer questions with more depth and detail as we read and discuss ‘The Train to impossible places’.

Reading homework: We are so pleased with how our lovely Goldfinches are improving with getting their diary signed and reading with greater independence.

Please comment in your child’s diary when they have read aloud to you and sign when they have read independently to themselves. Please support your child to read for 10-20 minutes daily. In year 4 it is fine to have a mixture of your child reading aloud to you and them reading quietly to themselves.

Spelling: Our spelling focus this week will be from the y3/4 statutory spelling list and due to a busy week and lots of assessments this week- these will be the same spellings as last week.

Spellings to learn for our test on Friday 9th December: breathe, build, busy, business, calendar, caught, certain, accidentally, answer, bicycle.

Have a go at using the pyramid to practise at home.

Maths:  We will develop our addition and subtraction problem solving skills using a variety of methods to solve them.

Maths Homework:  Have a go at the 8x table fortune teller and board game.

Have a go at the Maths Frame game which is modelled on the end of Year 4 Multiplication Check https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/477/Multiplication-Tables-Check

If you play the normal mode it will give any fact up to 12x12 with 6 seconds to answer. If you click ‘adjust difficulty’ you can choose the times table and change the time.

PE: Our PE day is Friday morning. Please come to school wearing appropriate PE kit- White t-shirt, black/blue plain hoodie and tracksuit bottoms or shorts, hair tied back and earrings removed or covered. As the grass might be wet first thing, please send your child with spare school shoes and socks to change in to after.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us via the office if you would like to discuss anything about your child.  admin@lostockgralam.cheshire.sch.uk     01606668270

Reading homework: Please comment in your child’s diary when they have read aloud to you and sign when they have read independently to themselves. Please support your child to read for 10-20 minutes daily. In year 4 it is fine to have a mixture of your child reading aloud to you and them reading quietly to themselves.
