Robins Week beg. 17th July, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 13th Jul 2023 @ 6:27pm

Thank you to everyone who attended our Open Evening. It was lovely to see the joy on the children's faces as they shared all their books and work with you. We will be sending home their old books over the next couple of days so if they don't have a rucksack it would be useful to bring in a bag to enable the children to take home their books. Some of their books that they are currrently using will be passed up to their Year 4 class so they can continue to use these next year. It has been lovely to have Miss Charlton working with the children in class this week. This has allowed her to build relationships with the children before September.

We have had another great week of swimming. We will have some more intensive lessons for Robins on Monday and then Tuesday everyone will have their last lesson. An email will be sent out to those that need swim kit in school for both days.

Thank you to everyone for your support with homework this year. The children have been amazing with their reading at home this year, practising their weekly spellings and learning their times tables.

Next week we will be focusing on completing our Ancient Civilisation topic. Although I don't think we will get it finished by the end of term so this will be continued by Miss Charlton in Year 4 and will act as a good transition project for the class.

We will also be finishing of our Art and DT work for this year as well as completing our Maths objectives on Measure and Statistics.

Thank you for your outstanding support this year and I look forward to watching your lovely children continue to bloom in Year 4.

Please feel free to get in touch if there is anything we can help you with,

Robins week beg. 10th July, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 6th Jul 2023 @ 5:42pm

Wow! What a week we have had with the pool on site! The children have loved their swimming lessons and have showed both courage and perseverance. Some of the children have already met the expectations for the end of Key Stage 2. Next week, we will regroup the children based on how they have done this week and we will let you know when they will have their next swim session.

Please remember to read with your child for 10 - 15 mins daily and record in diary if possible. Also take a look at their reading target which is on a sticker in their diary, some children may have the same target for a few weeks to work on. This term we will be mainly focusing on vocabulary development.

Spellings for next week will continue to include words from the Statutory Year 3/4 word list. These spellings are hard and often don't link to any of the patterns that we have already covered this year. Therefore we have been looking at different strategies to help us to learn them e.g. looking for smaller words within the word to remember, looking for double letters, drawing around the word, drawing images to help us remember how to spell tricky parts of the word etc.

perhaps, popular, potatoes, promise, quarter, recent, regular, reign

Spelling quiz next week will be on Friday 14th July.

In Maths we are currently working on Telling the Time to the nearest minute on an analogue clock and reading the time on a digital clock. Can they read the time to the nearest hour? half hour? quarter to? quarter past? in 5 minute intervals? in 1 minute intervals? What time do they get up at? What time do they leave for school? What time does the school day end? Asking lots of questions like these about the time throughout the day would be beneficial.

It would be useful to play these games at home and to discuss the time.

Robins have worked so hard to complete all their mid-year assessments this week. They have enjoyed the longer breaks and fun activities that we have done in the afternoons to make up for our busy mornings! I will be able to share their results and progress with you at Parents Evening next week.

We have also completed lots of extra Science lessons to mark British Science Week. They have discussed the concept of connections, made some excellent home structures using spaghetti and marshmallows, researched the scientist Thomas Edison and made food chains that could be found on a farm.

The children from Year 4 visited our classroom this week to present their posters and work that they have learnt about volcanoes. An excellent oracy experience for all involved. We will present our findings from our RE topic - different places of worships - to Year 4 after the Easter break when we have found out some more information.

Robins week beg. 13th March, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 9th Mar 2023 @ 5:34pm

Robins had a lovely visit to church on Monday to learn about Lent. Vicar Andrew led the worship and told the children all about how Jesus spent time in the desert to reflect and talk to God. The children were encouraged to think about what they could do to help others during Lent. They also enjoyed an amazing Science Workshop this morning to launch National Science week, which will take place next week. We will be doing lots of exciting activites next week to mark this special occasion. I think some of the children have also noticed that we were delivered 'tests' to our class this week. I have spoken to the children that they have nothing to worry about and that next week we will do some of these in the morning. Also we do these activities so that I can check what I need to teach them next term to ensure they are achieving the best that they can in English and Maths. I will also be able to let you know at Parents Evening how your child gets on with them and how they are performing overall in Year 3. Please reassure your child that they must not worry and that these 'tests' are more about helping me!

Please remember to read with your child for 10 - 15 mins daily and record in diary if possible. Also take a look at their reading target which is on a sticker in their diary, some children may have the same target for a few weeks to work on.

We will continue to revise some of the spelling rules that we have already covered in Year 3 so far this year. Spellings for next week will focus on the suffix - ly  suddenly, carefully, finally, gently, simply, merrily, humbly, horribly

Remember to have a go at this spelling game to revise spellings.

The children have all settled well back into school life after their half term break. It has been lovely hearing about how much they enjoyed the break at home with their friends and family. This week has been very exciting with World Book Day. I love how enthusiastic all the children are about reading.

This week we have been looking at learning our 4 and 8 times tables so it would be useful to play Hit the Button focusing on these times tables facts.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Here is a good website to play some Maths games that I'm sure the children will enjoy.

https://www.multiplication.com/games/all-games

The children should have a x4 sheet for homework this week. If they find this too difficult please stick with learning x3. Use the online games suggested above, ask them to write out the multiples and to tell you some key facts.

PE days for this half term will remain as Monday and Friday

HOME- Our new whole school topic

After half term we will begin our new whole school topic - Home. This has been planned around the theme of the importance of our homes to us and the human conflicts and natural disasters that result in homelessness for others. We are hoping to use photographs of our children’s homes as part of our displays. If you would like to, please send or e-mail a photo/copy of your home into school after half term. Thank you.

Robins week beg. 27th February, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 16th Feb 2023 @ 5:45pm

We had an amazing trip to Beeston Castle. It definitely helped to consolidate all the learning that we have been doing in class around the Stone Age and Bronze Age as well as giving us first hand experiences to touch spear heads, arrows, animal skins etc and to imagine what life was really like living in a roundhouse.

Our trip also inspired the children to produce fantastic adventure stories based on our class text Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura. Your child should have brought home a photocopy of their finished story today so they can share it with you. They have all worked extremely hard on these pieces of writing and have shown how much they have come on since our last long piece of writing before Christmas.

After half term we will continue to focus on developing new  vocabulary using words from The Iron Man by Ted Hughes as well as ensuring all our reading is done with fluency and expression. We will continue to build on this next week.

Please remember to read with your child for 10 - 15 mins daily and record in diary if possible. Also take a look at their reading target which is on a sticker in their diary, some children may have the same target for a few weeks to work on.

You will have noticed last week that we were revising some of the spelling rules that we have covered previously and will continue to do this for a few weeks after the half term break. Spellings for next week are incomplete, invisible, disagree, disappear, unkind, unhappy, unlock, unsafe

Thank you to everyone who has been reading at home this week and recording it in the homework diaries. Aim for 10 - 15 mins every night. You might find your child likes to read by themselves which is fine but also ask them to read a page or 2 to you to ensure they can read their chosen book with fluency and expression.

It was great to see the children remember more of their phonics sounds in their writing this week. Thank you for your support with their spelling homework. We will now move on to looking at our spellings for Year 3. You will notice that they had these spellings early on in September but I felt they were too difficut at the time for most of the children so we will be doing some work on them again the first week back after the half term.

Spelling Quiz on Friday 4th November - incomplete, invisible, incapable, independent, dishonest, disagree, disappear, dislike, disapprove, incorrect.

Remember to make learning spellings fun. Maybe write out words in coloured pen, underline the key sounds, draw around the word with images, draw around the shape of the word, write on pavement in chalk, trace words in sand etc.

Here is an online spelling game that your child will enjoy to revise Year 2 spellings and they can also have a go at some of the Year 3 spellings!

The children have worked hard this week on their 4 times tables. We have looked at patterns on the 100 square and made connections with other times tables that they know. Your child will get a x4 activity on Friday but they will also have the option of taking home a x2/5/10 activity if this matches their needs better. Homework can be completed over the weekend or next week and returned by next Wednesday 2nd November.

Continue to use this game to revise and learn times tables.

In class the children have also been using this multiples game to help learn their time tables.

The children have really enjoyed using this train game to revise their addition skills. It is lovely to see them challenge themselves as they move through the levels. Continue to just focus on the addition and subtraction carraige.

After half term our focus in Maths will be Addition and Subtraction.

Remember our PE days will remain as Monday and Wednesday for this term.

In Computing we will continue to use the Keynote app to prepare presentations on the Stone Age.

We have also begun our DT work for this term which will focus on the Sustainability of Food.

The children will have Ukulele lessons on a Thursday afternoon starting after half term until Christmas.

Robins week beg. 17th October, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 13th Oct 2022 @ 5:32pm

The children had a wonderful morning at Forest Schools this week. They explored the forest and played a variety of games to build teamwork and reasoning skills. The activities were greatly enjoyed by the children and it was lovely to see their smiling faces, laughter and chatter with their friends as they spent time in the forest.

Remember Parents Evening is next Wednesday and Thursday so if you have not booked an appointment please do so.

Lots of great paragraph writing in English this week taking on the role of different characters in our story the Seal Surfer. Next week, we will begin to draft and write our end of unit piece - a letter from Tom to his grandad.
