Easter Blog Week 2 - W.B 13.04.20, by Miss Beattie

Date: 12th Apr 2020 @ 3:39pm

Easter Break Home Learning

I hope you have enjoyed your first week of the Easter holidays.

Again, here are some ideas for home learning ideas that you could do over week 2!

Week 2

Reading

Continue with some form of daily reading – you reading to your child, your child reading to you or whole-family reading time! Maybe try listen to David Walliam’s books this week on https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/. Every day at 11am, you can listen one of David Walliams’ World’s Worst Children stories, so sit down, take a break, and enjoy 20ish minutes of pure fun!

Easter Project

Activities you could have a go at this week:

  • Make an Easter card for your family or friends using colour to show the symbolic meaning of the story. Use bright, happy colours to represent the happiness that Jesus came back to life and a small amount of dark colour (a cross possibly) to show the sadness from the story too.
  • Watch the Easter story on YouTube and make a cartoon style story board.
  • Decorate a hardboiled egg with an Easter theme.
  • Write an Easter prayer thanking God for Jesus life.
  • Make an Easter garden. Use the following link for inspiration: https://request.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/REquest-Easter-Garden-Final-v1.mp4

Stay safe and enjoy the second week of the holidays.

Speak soon,

Miss Beattie and Mrs Esling xx

Easter Blog Week 1 - W.B 06.04.20, by Miss Beattie

Date: 5th Apr 2020 @ 3:26pm

Easter Break Home Learning

As a school, we have decided that the daily blogs will not continue through the Easter holidays. We think it’s important you all have a break from this kind of learning and instead play, bake, garden, spend time together and relax!

Here are some ideas for home learning ideas that you could do over the two week break, if you’d like!

Week 1

Reading

Continue with some form of daily reading – you reading to your child, your child reading to you or whole-family reading time! Maybe you could try listening to some audio books on https://stories.audible.com/start-listen. They are free for as long as schools are closed!

Zoo Visit

Go on a virtual visit to Chester Zoo with your family. On 27th March, Chester Zoo held a virtual zoo day where the live streamed footage from different enclosures around the zoo. Relive this experience by visiting the Chester Zoo YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ9UagJLiMdBIFOHYwT7eLA

Enjoy!

Easter Project

Friday 3rd April, by Miss Beattie

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 8:49am

Good Morning Robins

Its Friday!! Well done children and well done parents – I am so proud of everything you have achieved this week and you should be too (no matter how big or small).

Like we did last Friday, I would like you to start your day by focussing on positive thoughts. Write down or simply think about 3 things that have made you smile or that you have enjoyed this week. I like to write them down so that when I am feeling a little bit sad or fed up, I can look back at them to put a smile on my face.

As we are approaching Easter, you could take a look at your RE project today and listen to or read the Easter story. There are also some lovely Easter colouring activities in your Home Learning Packs to keep you busy!

For anyone who would like to continue practising some spellings while we are off check out the following website. It has got all of the year 3/4 spelling rules, each with a word list and interactive games to help you learn them. You could even hold your own mini quiz with your adults at home J

https://spellingframe.co.uk/

As it is the Easter holidays, there is no expectation that the children should be doing any work over the next two weeks. I will however update the blog once each week with ideas on how to keep busy over the holidays for those who want to get involved.

Have a lovely Easter and don’t eat too many Easter eggs!!

Sending lots of love and well wishes,

Miss Beattie and Mrs Esling xx

Message from Mrs Powell:

“You will never have this day again. So make it count”

Good morning children, it may not feel like it but we are all very lucky to have each other. What are you going to do today to make it different from yesterday, we never get today again. What will you do today?  How will you use it?  Will you draw a picture? Do some PE?  Help someone at home? I’m keeping a diary so that I can remember how I made each day count, could you?

Stay safe and remember this: “I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”

Thursday 2nd April, by Miss Beattie

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 8:29am

Good Morning and Happy Thursday J

Can you believe it’s Thursday already? I certainly can’t!

I was feeling very tired this morning so I dragged myself out for a run to help kick start my day. It has definitely made me feel so much better! I’m going to play some fetch with Teddy in the garden now as he isn’t allowed out on walks just yet. How are you going to start your day?

Maybe during your ‘screen time’ today you could have a look at some maths games on https://www.topmarks.co.uk/

To encourage you to get outdoors where possible I have attached some lovely maths activities to complete outside in nature. I have also attached some maths activities using Lego that you might enjoy!

Stay positive and keep smiling! I can’t wait to see you all again!!

Sending lots of love and hugs

Miss Beattie and Mrs Esling xx

Message from Mrs Powell:

“Treat others the way you want to be treated.”

Dear children, Are you getting a bit grumpy?  It is all very strange, before you say anything when you are cross, say to yourself would I want someone to speak to me like that?  Remember we all get grumpy and that is OK!

Wednesday 1st April , by Miss Beattie

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 8:36am

Happy Wednesday Robins J

Yet again, I am blown away by what you have achieved this week already!! I am so proud of each of you and can’t wait to see more of what you have been up to today!

I hope you haven’t forgotten about Joe Wick’s PE lessons every morning at 9am on YouTube. If you would like to try something new this week, have a look at the following active activities to kick start your morning:

I have been trying out some new recipes at home to keep me busy. Yesterday I made one pot Mediterranean chicken (It was delicious – I have attached the recipe below). Maybe you could help out in the kitchen this week to cook something new for your family?

https://pinchofnom.com/recipes/one-pot-mediterranean-chicken-orzo/

Keep making me proud J

Love, Miss Beattie and Mrs Esling xx

Message from Mrs Powell:

“You’re off to great places. Today is your day.” – Dr. Seuss

Dear children, where do you dream of going?  What do you want to do?  Just because we can’t visit new places doesn’t mean we can’t think about what we would like to do and where we would like to visit.  This saying also means you can do great things.  What great thing can do today?  This can be anything, big or small it is still an achievement.

Tuesday 31st March, by Miss Beattie

Date: 31st Mar 2020 @ 8:42am

Good Morning my lovely Robins  J

I hope you are all staying positive and smiling! I love hearing about everything you have been up to at home, so if you haven’t already, tweet me pictures @LostockGralamPr

Today you could choose some maths, writing or arithmetic work from your pack. Or take a look at White Rose for some super online lessons about fractions: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/

Remember it is so important to balance your school work, with some quiet time and creative time (reading, drawing, lego, baking, gardening, etc.) Don’t let the colder weather put you off -  try to spend as much time as possible outside in the fresh air. It always makes me feel better!

Lots of love, Miss Beattie and Mrs Esling xx

Message from Mrs Powell:

I think I can. I know I can.”

Dear children, when we do something do we say we can’t do it?  Try and change that today and tell yourself you can do anything.  Remember you are amazing and if you believe in yourself you can do anything!

Monday 30th March, by Miss Beattie

Date: 30th Mar 2020 @ 9:04am

Happy Monday Robins

I hope you all had a lovely weekend and are ready for another busy week of Home Learning (See attached timetable for your jobs to do this week – I will update this on a two weekly basis to give you enough time to complete all your projects). Please remember that this is just a suggested timetable and the children’s happiness and wellbeing is our biggest priority! Please do not worry if you are not getting as much school work done as you would like!

I am missing you lots today and sending you all a big virtual hug!!!

I have spent lots of time in my garden this weekend (mainly making it puppy proof as Teddy loves to dig the borders and eat the stones!!) What have you been up to?

White Rose Maths Hub has published amazing Home Learning resources all about fractions – and the best thing is… they are completely FREE!! There are 5 lessons in total – including a fabulous video which teaches you the new concept and an activity book for you to work through. Each lesson even comes with an answer booklet so you can go back and mark your own work! Why not do one lesson each day this week? Check it out here:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/

I know lots of you have been getting involved in the Lego Challenge – I have LOVED seeing your creations on Twitter. I have also attached a drawing challenge for those of you who would prefer to draw J

Stay safe Robins and remember: Ready, Respectful and Safe (Even at home)

Lots of Love, Miss Beattie and Mrs Esling xx

Message from Mrs Powell:

“With the new day come new thoughts and new strengths.”

Dear children, This is now your second week, you have shown how great you are, what will you do today, how do you show how clever and strong you are each day?

Friday 27th March, by Miss Beattie

Date: 27th Mar 2020 @ 8:46am

Happy Friday J

As we reach the end of the week I want to say a huge WELL DONE!! I’m sure learning from home has been fun but also challenging at times. I want you to begin your morning by thinking about or writing down 3 things you have found a little tricky this week, and then 3 things you have enjoyed. I am going to do this too as it’s easy to focus on the negative things that have happened, instead of the lovely positive things.

“Every day may not be good… but there is something good in every day”.

Today you could complete some more work from your Home Learning Packs and use the lovely online resources on your Task List to help you – There are some great quizzes and games to make your learning more fun. It is also really important that you are reading every single day. This could be anything – a book, magazine, newspaper… Whatever you enjoy!! Or you could even listen to an audio book!

Are you remembering to water your courgettes? I hope so J

Remember to give yourself a well-earned rest this weekend (that includes you too parents) – no home-learning just lots of fun and hopefully some sunshine to accompany it!!

Stay home, stay safe and keep washing those hands!!

Speak to you on Monday

Love Miss Beattie and Mrs Esling xxx

Thursday 26th March, by Miss Beattie

Date: 26th Mar 2020 @ 8:30am

Happy Thursday Robins!

We are nearly at the end of our first week learning from home! I have woken up feeling very positive and grateful this morning that we are all able to stay at home and keep ourselves safe during this strange time. I started my day with some yoga to help me feel relaxed and ready for my day. Why not give it a go too? J I have attached a link to a video just for children but there are lots more on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X655B4ISakg

If you are feeling a little bit sad or fed up, take a look at the Resilience Toolkit I have attached below. It will give you lots of positive ways you can look after your mind and brain during our time off school.

How are you getting on at home? Have you managed to do some work from your packs yet? Don’t worry if you haven’t got lots completed – just do what you can each day and remember to have fun! I hope you are all helping mums and dads around the house too like we chatted about. I know just how super you all are at tidying up!

It has been really super to see some of you completing the Lego Challenge!! If you try one of the challenges at home, please tweet me a picture @LostockGralamPr (I have attached it again below).

Stay positive, keep smiling and remember “A day without laughter is a day wasted” (one of my favourite Winnie the Pooh quotes).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via email or Twitter J

Enjoy your day! Speak tomorrow!

Love Miss Beattie and Mrs Esling x

I have been very busy with little Teddy (trying to make sure he doesn’t chew my furniture)!!!

I know that lots of you are joining in with Joe Wickes PE sessions – If you haven’t given it a go yet, why not join in this morning and share your photos and videos on Twitter?

I have also found this fabulous Lego challenge (as I know a lot of you love Lego!!) – Why not tick off each challenge as you complete it?

Today, you could complete some more maths/writing work from your pack and make a start on your History/Geography project (see timetable linked below). Please send me lots of pictures of what you get up to today on Twitter… your photos and videos have made me smile!

Message from Mrs Powell:

“When you see someone putting on his Big Boots, you can be pretty sure that an Adventure is going to happen.” - Winnie the Pooh

Dear children,

We have all started on a strange adventure, I wonder what we will learn to do over the next few months?   I think you will find that your parents are the best teachers!  Enjoy any activity you do for the first time, we are going to make bread in my house!

Monday Morning Hello, by Miss Beattie

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 9:51am

Good Morning Robins,

I hope you have been able to enjoy the beautiful sunshine as much as possible this weekend – I too have spent some time in my garden!

I’m sure it feels a little bit strange not coming into school this morning, as I know it has felt this way for me. I am so proud of every single one of you and I know you are going to surprise me with how amazingly you face this new challenge J Remember:

‘You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart… I’ll always be with you.’’ A.A Milne

I want you to enjoy your first week of Home Learning and remember that learning is all around us – Enjoy spending time outdoors where possible, cook, bake, read, play board games, but most importantly… HAVE FUN!

It is so important to stay active (even when stuck indoors)! Why not start each morning with an active PE lesson with Joe Wickes live on YouTube – Just tune into ‘The body Coach TV’ on YouTube at 9am each morning for a fun way to kick-start your day!

Don’t worry about your Home Learning Packs today – but here are a few tasks to ease you into this new style of learning:

  • Times Tables Rock Stars – Your login details are stuck inside your new Home Learning books
  • Reading – Curl up with your favourite book for 20 minute (Maybe you could build a reading ‘den’ – I used to love doing this when I was younger!!)
  • Art – I have saw lots of my neighbours painting pictures of rainbows to put up on their window to make others smile as they walk past. Maybe you could draw a rainbow and put it in your window too?
  • Spend some time in the garden – remember to water your courgette seeds and plant your sunflower!

Mrs Esling also says a big hello! We are both missing you all lots!

Remember to stay safe, stay indoors and keep checking Twitter for more updates J

Week Beginning 16.03.20, by Miss Beattie

Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 3:26pm

Another super week for Robins Class! We particularly enjoyed our Science Workshops on Monday!

In writing, we will continue to explore our new book ‘Silence Seeker’. We will use the text to build our vocabulary and write direct speech between characters. We will then apply our new learning by writing our own interpretation of the opening of the story.

In maths we will be consolidating our understanding of multiplication and divisions by solving various problem solving tasks. We will also recap column method for addition and subtraction and will look at how we can use inverse operations to solve missing box questions.

Our spellings for the test on Friday 20th March will look at words with the –ion suffix:

action, collection, construction, attraction, reaction, invention, injection, subtraction

When practicing your child’s spellings with them, try removing the –ion suffix and focus on learning the root word (e.g. act)

Parents Evening will take place on Monday 16th and Wednesday 18th of March. Your child has now been given your appointment card with your time slot on it. Please come and speak to me if you cannot make your appointment or wish to rearrange.

As always, please come in to speak to us if you have any questions.

Week Beginning 09.03.20, by Miss Beattie

Date: 4th Mar 2020 @ 5:05pm

What a busy week we have had! The children in Robins Class have been very busy writing their information texts based on the book ‘Big Blue Whale’. Mrs Esling and I have been so impressed with the children’s writing and want to say a huge well done!

After finishing our writing this week, we will be starting our new class text ‘The Silence Seeker’ by Ben Morley on Monday. We will begin by looking at the book title/cover and making predictions about what we think it is about. We will continue to look at book clues throughout the week to add to our predictions. Through these clues will build up our knowledge of what the term ‘asylum seeker’ means.

In maths, we will be putting our knowledge of written methods for multiplication and division to the test by completing a variety of problem solving questions.

Next week is British Science Week which we will be celebrating in school. The whole school will take part in a Science Workshop on Monday morning led by Techniquest. Robins class will have an additional workshop in the afternoon to support us with our ‘Forces’ topic in science.

Our spellings for the test on Friday 13th March will look at words with the ‘i’ sound spelt ‘y’:

Egypt, gym, myth, pyramid, cymbals, mystery, mysterious, syllable

Reminders:

Monday 9th March: Robins will have PE with Mr Ault, in addition to Gymnastics on Tuesday. Please ensure children have the correct kit in school on these days.

Monday 9th March: Techniquest Show and Forces Workshop.

Friday 13th March: Children can wear sporty clothes in support of Sport Relief.

As always, please pop in to see us if you have any questions or queries.

Firstly, I would like to thank all the lovely family members who joined us for our Science lesson today – The children loved having you there!

What a great few days we have had in Robins class. I have particularly enjoyed watching the children plan their own informative texts about whales – They have learnt so much from the book ‘Big Blue Whale’. Looking ahead to next week, the children will be using their plans to write and edit their own informative texts about the dangers whales face and how we can help to protect them.

In maths, we will be concentrating on written methods for division. We will also be consolidating our knowledge of the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.

Our fantastic ‘Adrift’ project will commence next week. It will be kicked off with a theatre performance of ‘Adrift’ on Wednesday afternoon. Following on from this, we will be considering what the term ‘home’ means to us – Thank you to the children who have already sent in a photo of the outside of their house. If you haven’t already, please could these be sent in for next week. We will also be defining the term ‘migration’ and considering the movement of people all the way back in the Stone Age.

In science, we will be finishing our topic by comparing and grouping the skeletons of different animals. We will define the terms ‘Exoskeleton’ and ‘Endoskeleton’.

Our spellings for the test on Friday 6th March will continue to look at words with the ‘sh’ sound spelt ‘ch’:

chalet, sachet, ricochet, crochet, machinery, pistachio, parachute

Please try to read with your child and practice their spellings/ times tables daily. We have noticed a huge improvement with this – Keep it up Robins!

Reminders:

PE will now take place on a Tuesday (Gymnastics)

Wednesday 4th March: World Book Day for Lostock

Wednesday 4th March: Adrift Theatre Performance

Week Beginning 24.02.20, by Miss Beattie

Date: 12th Feb 2020 @ 1:15pm

Can you believe another half term is over? The children have worked extremely hard yet again and deserve a restful break.

During our first week back after half term, we will be continuing to look at written methods of multiplication and division. In our writing lessons, we will begin by looking at the features of a variety of persuasive information texts. We will then be planning our own texts which will inform people about whales and persuade them to help in the effort to protect them. In our reading lessons will continue to practice the skimming and scanning techniques to retrieve information quickly from the fiction text ‘The New Boy’.

On Wednesday 26th February you are invited to our KS2 Come and Join Us at 2pm which will have a Science focus. We will be identifying why we need a skeleton and exploring the bones that make up the skeletal system.

Our spellings for the test on Friday 28th February will look at words with the ‘sh’ sound spelt ‘ch’:

Chef, chute, machine, brochure, moustache, chandelier Chicago

Please try to read with your child and practice their spellings/times tables where possible over the half term.

Reminders:

Friday 14th February: Please send your child to school with an old t-shirt or shirt (named) for our art day.

Wednesday 26th February: KS2 Come and Join Us – we would love it if you could join us at 2pm for a fun science lesson.

Thursday 27th February: All children will take part in a Disability Awareness Assembly and Workshop.

As always, please pop in to see us if you have any questions or queries.

Have a safe and restful half term.

Week Beginning 10.02.20, by Miss Beattie

Date: 5th Feb 2020 @ 4:42pm

Welcome back to Robins Class Blog – We have had another super week and the children have worked extremely hard!

As we look ahead to our final week of this half term, we have lots of exciting things coming up. In our writing lessons we will be using drama to help us produce a piece of writing where we will be writing in role as a character from Michael Morpurgo’s ‘This Morning I Met a Whale’. We will also be using a range of non-fiction information texts and the internet to learn more about the human impact on whales and how we can protect them. In maths, we will be looking at a variety of ways we can multiply a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number.

In History, the children will be using the internet to research the achievements of the Iron Age and will then decide which achievement they feel is most important, giving a reason for their choice. In Science, we will be using a Venn Diagram to compare and group animals based on what they eat.

On Friday 14th February, Robins will partake in an art day where we will use clay to construct a pot, replicating Stone Age pottery.

Please send your child to school with an old t-shirt or shirt with their name on it. This can then be kept in school to wear during our art lessons.

Due to our Art Day, Robins spelling test will take place on Thursday 13th February. Our spellings this week will continue to look at words with the ‘c’ sound spelt ‘ch’:

scheme, chord, orchid, chemist, mechanic, technical, stomach, monarch

You should have now received a permission slip for your child to attend our school trip to the Liverpool World Museum on 3rd June 2020. If you have any questions or queries regarding this, please pop in to see me.

Hi everyone,

We have had another fantastic week in Robins class!

Firstly, I would like to thank the children who have been bringing a smaller book bag to school this week – our cloakroom is looking much tidier!

In writing next week we will be retrieving information from our non-fiction text ‘Big Blue Whale’ to help us map the journey of the blue whale throughout the year. Children will work towards writing an explanation of where the blue whale migrates to and why using prepositions and adverbs to express cause.

In maths we will be looking at the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. We will also be looking at the patterns in multiplication and how we can use known multiplication facts to help us work out more difficult ones.

In geography we will be using maps and digital mapping tools to locate rivers in the UK, including the River Weaver. This week in Science, Robins will be carrying out research to help them compare and contrast the diets of different animals.

We have noticed during our weekly Times Tables quiz that children can recall multiplication and division facts but need to build up their pace in order to complete them within an appropriate time.

Robins spellings for the test on Friday 7th February will look at words with the ‘c’ sound spelt ‘ch’:

ache, anchor, chaos, chorus, echo, chemical, school, character

Robins have had another busy and exciting week!

Next week, Robins Class will continue reading their non-fiction text ‘Big Blue Whale’ by Nicola Davies. We will begin the week by finding similes used in the text. We will then generate our own similes and use these to create a simile poem all about whales. Towards the end of the week we will be retrieving information from the book to help us write an informative leaflet about whales and what/how they eat.

In maths we will be solving problems using multiplication and division. The children are absolutely loving our new Power Maths Books.

In History we will be making comparisons and contrasts between the Stone Age and the Iron Age using a lovely non-fiction text called ‘A Street Through Time’.

This week in Art, Robins will be carrying out an artist study on Bernard Leach, a British Studio Potter. They will be making close observations of his work, considering the story behind each piece of pottery.

Robins spellings for the test on Friday 31st January will continue to look at words with the suffix –ation. This week the ‘e’ must be dropped from the root word before the suffix is added.

preparation, admiration, sensation, exploration, reservation, imagination, restoration, adoration

We have noticed that more children are reading regularly at home – keep this up Robins! Parents, please try to remember to sign your child’s diary 3 times per week so they can earn their raffle ticket.

As always, if you have any questions or queries please pop in to speak to us.

Another super week for Robins! I am extremely proud of how hard the children have worked this week to produce their own fantasy stories.

Next week, Robins Class will begin their new non-fiction text in our Writing lessons. We will begin by listening to sound effects and will make predictions about what our book might be about. We will then unpick the text page by page throughout the week.

In maths we will continue to look at multiplication and division – specifically multiplying and dividing by 8. We will also use our 2, 4, and 8 times tables to do some problem solving.

In science, Robins will be learning about the different food groups and their functions. We will be thinking about the consequences of not eating a balanced diet. In topic, Robins will be continuing to think about Stonehenge. They will be deciding whether it really is the biggest achievement of the Bronze Age. We will begin by researching the other achievements of this time period and then we will hold a class debate.

Robins spellings for the test on Friday 24th January will look at words with the suffix –ation.

What a great first week back after Christmas! Robins have settled back into school life very well and have produced some excellent work.

Next week, Robins will continue to look at multiplication and division in maths – specifically multiplying and dividing by 4. In our writing lessons we will be using all of learning from our book Winter’s Child to plan, draft and edit our own fantasy stories (I’m already looking forward to reading these)!

In topic we will be using maps to locate counties and cities in the UK. We will begin by locating where we live and comparing this to the location of Stonehenge. We will also be commencing our new science topic where we will be learning about animals and humans and what they need to stay fit and healthy. We will begin our topic next week by sharing what we already know and what we would like to find out. Robins will also begin their new art topic by looking at pottery from the Stone Age and identifying the techniques and patterns that were used.

As you can see, we have a very busy but exciting week ahead of us!

Robins spellings for the test on Friday 17th January will continue to look at homophones:

Meet and meat

Great and grate

Bear and bare

Break and brake

Week and weak

Please try to read with your child daily, as well as practice their spellings and times tables.
