Puffins Week Beginning 28th February, by Mrs Shimmin

Date: 28th Feb 2022 @ 2:25am

Hello and Welcome to Puffins Weekly blog!

I hope everyone had a great half term break and did lots of fun things!

This week

Puffins will be listening to lots of stories ready for our world book day this week. Remember we will be celebrating it on Wednesday 2nd March so if your child wants to dress up as a character from a book, they can do that but if not, they can come in their own clothes instead.

We will be continuing to work hard on the school garden and planting out more seeds and seedlings this week. For science, we will be looking at life cycles. We will be ordering our caterpillars this week so that we can see a ‘real’ life cycle and release them as butterflies before the Easter holidays.

Keep those 2 litre plastic bottles only coming! We need 1500 altogether so ask all your family members, grannies, grandads, aunts, uncles, cousins and even neighbours to keep collecting for us. Puffins are really looking forward to getting the greenhouse built.

Please encourage your child to read a few pages of their book each night and it would be helpful to practice their times tables with them too. At the moment, we are working on 10’s, 2’s and 5’s. The websites below are great fun for Times Tables practice.

Robins Week Beg 14th February 2022, by Mrs Rice

Date: 10th Feb 2022 @ 10:16pm

Hi Everyone

We have had a super week in Robins class this week. I have been really impressed with the children's atitudes to learning. They help each other, show kindness and have enjoyed working together as a team. We had an enjoyable rock hunt in our church yard as we explored the different rocks that the grave stones were made from. The children impressed me with their Science vocabulary such as permeable and erosion.

Next week, on Thursday 17th February we will be having a Forest Schools/History day outside. We will be making Stone Age houses from items found in the environment. Please send the children in wearing old clothes that you do not mind becoming dirty, wellies, clean shoes for inside, a warm waterproof coat and gloves.

Our Writing lessons will continue to focus on the Stone Age Boy story. We will be writing comparisons between nowadays and prehistoric times using compound sentences and conjunctions.

Mrs Rice's spelling group are looking at what happens to verbs that with an 'e' when the suffix 'tion' is added.

elation, vibration, location, education, hesitation, concentration, celebration, exaggeration

In Maths, we will explore addition and subtraction problems that involve us working systematically and logically. We will embedd our understanding of the column method of both addition and subtraction.

The children are totally immersed in our Iron Man story. They are making sensible predictions and showing sound understanding of the characters. Next week, we will continue to make inferences about the character's emotions and motives as well as exploring the impact of Ted Hughes' repeating phrases and powerful vocabulary.

In Science, the children will be investigating the permeability of rocks by making predictions, carrying out a fair test, making close observations and drawing conclusions based on their findings.

In RE, we will be learning about Jesus' disciples and the importance they have had on Christianity.

Please continue to read regularly with your child at home and spend 5 minutes daily learning their times tables.

As always, please come and see me if you have any queries or questions.

Many thanks

Mrs Rice

Skylarks WB 14.2.22, by Miss Beattie

Date: 10th Feb 2022 @ 4:09pm

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

What a super week we have had this week. I have particularly loved watching the children plan their own myths this week. It is clear they have thoroughly enjoyed our books inspired by Norse mythology this half term and they have really taken on board all of our learning. I already can’t wait to read our final stories next week.

Next Week (W.B. 14.02.22)

In English, we will be using our story plans to write our own myths which must include superhuman characters, appropriate settings and exciting quests. We will be aiming to apply all of our learning from this half term on relative clause sentences, using commas accurately and using dialogue to move the story along.

In Shared Reading, we will finish reading our book ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’ which the children have thoroughly enjoyed. Our focus next week will continue to be on making comparisons within the text. Will Odd manage to save Asgard from the Frost Giants?

In maths, we will continue to focus on written methods of multiplication. We will look specifically at the column method to multiply 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.  We will also consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4-A-Day activities.

In RE we will continue with our humanism topic. We will be using all of new knowledge about humanism to help us decide how a humanist might react and what they might say in different scenarios.

In science we will continue to work on our science topic ‘Animals, including Humans’. We will recap our learning from last week on the life cycle of a butterfly, before moving on to look at the life cycle of a frog. We will then use a Venn diagram to compare the similarities and differences between insects and amphibians.

During our topic day we will be extending our knowledge past the Anglo Saxon era and will be considering what happened when the Vikings invaded Britain. We will learn about the Viking raids, Danelaw and Danegeld.

Our PE day for the Spring Term will be Friday so your child should come to school in their PE kit on this day. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue.

Homework

In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.

If your child is finding the homework tricky, Mrs Hulse and I will ensure that supervision is provided on a Wednesday lunchtime for your child to ask any questions or receive some support to complete their homework.

The children should complete page 24 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 18th February. This homework is looking at written multiplication. Children are familiar with the column method which we use in school.

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Our spellings for the quiz on Thursday 17th February will be the next 10 words from the Y5/6 statutory word list:

Identity, immediately, individual, interfere, interrupt, language, leisure, lightning, marvellous, mischievous

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ?

A very big thank you for all parents taking the time to discuss with me about their child on Tuesday, this week. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing their achievements with you all. Thank you for your continued support!

We have had an enjoyable week in Swallows. The children have loved working with Mrs Elson this week to explore all the techniques they have been learning to develop in art to create fantastic final pieces based on the ocean the Titanic crossed. The children have worked so well to support each other and provided good feedback to their chosen partners to support them in improving their piece. The children focussed on a piece of artwork created by the famous 'Hokusai' called 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa'.

New APP alert:

To support your child in their maths, knowing their number bonds to 10, addition and subtraction, then I believe this app is ideal. There is an app that has been developed by White Rose Maths called 1-Minute Maths. This app provides hints which are visuals to support your child if they are struggling. The app is completely FREE and just a few minutes a day could benefit your child hugely.

Skylarks WB 07.02.22, by Miss Beattie

Date: 3rd Feb 2022 @ 4:33pm

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

We have had a great week in Skylarks Class. It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged in their learning, especially during our work on the Anglo Saxons. The children worked so beautifully together to research our enquiry question ‘How did the Anglo Saxons change Britain’s identity?’

Next Week (W.B. 7.02.22)

In English, we will be planning our own myths based on our book ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’. We will use what we have read to plan our own heroes, villains, settings and quests before sequencing the main events in our own innovative plots. We will be using everything we have learnt this half term to help us with the planning process.

In Shared Reading, we will continue to read our book ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’. Our focus next week will continue to be on drawing inferences and making comparisons within the text. We will use our inference skills to decide how characters feel before comparing these feelings to those of different characters.

In maths, we will be looking at written methods of multiplication. We will be learning how to use the grid method as well as the column method to multiply 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.  We will also consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4-A-Day activities.

In RE we will continue with our humanism topic. We will be thinking about the different celebrations that humanists hold throughout the year, focussing specifically on humanist naming ceremonies.

In science we will be thinking about our science topic ‘Animals, including Humans’. We will be looking at the life cycles of amphibians and insects, before using a Venn diagram to compare the similarities and differences between these groups.

During our topic day we will continue to develop our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon era. We will be investigating the ancient Anglo Saxon burial site Sutton Hoo and the artefacts that were found here. We will ask and answer our own questions to help us understand what we can learn from these artefacts left behind.

Puffins - Week commencing 7th February 2022, by Mrs Shimmin

Date: 3rd Feb 2022 @ 2:28pm

Hello and Welcome to Puffins Weekly blog!

Friday Superstar: Harrison

Top Table: Shayne and Josh

This week Puffins have had a great time making a start on our school garden. We have been digging the big mound of earth at the front of the woodland. We were filling the wheelbarrow and emptying it onto the outer areas where we have decided to grow wild flowers to attract bees and butterflies.

Next week

Puffins will continue with their hard work in the mornings and enjoy the school garden project in the afternoons. Afternoons in the school garden will also incorporate Science, Geography, Art, DT and PHSCE. We found lots of different creatures living in the soil and many insect larvae so we will be taking photographs and researching them on the internet. We will be looking at life cycles and also finding out what would be the best plants to grow to attract insects and wild life into our school garden.

With our school garden project continuing every afternoon, please remember that they will need their wellies and warm clothing for their outdoor learning. Wellies can be kept in school if need be.

Please encourage your child to read a few pages of their book each night and it would be helpful to practice their times tables with them too. At the moment, we are working on 10’s, 2’s and 5’s. The websites below are great fun for Times Tables practice.

Date: 28th Jan 2022 @ 12:15pm

Hi Everyone

This week we will be immersed in our two wonderful texts The Iron Man and Stone Age Boy to help us with our Reading and Writing lessons. We will be using the suffixes er/est to enhance our setting descriptions and learning how to write a speech sandwich! We will also be using our inference skills to explain a character's feelings and actions.

In Maths, we will be problem solving using a combination of addition and subtraction. We will consolidate our written methods as well as deciding which questions we could solve mentally. We will also continue to work on the rapid recall of our multiplication and division facts.

Mrs Rice's spellings this week are focusing on when the letter 'y' makes the 'i' sound. Our words are:

Egypt, gym, myth, pyramid, cymbals, mystery, myserious and syllable.

Mrs Brennan's spellings are focusing the suffix less and ness. Our words are:

fearless, foolishness, goodnesss, illness, sadness, endless, faultless

Our RE work will provide us with the opportunities to explore how other religions worship. We will learn about Judaism, Islam and Hinduism. We will then compare and contrast these religions.

Our Science work is focusing on rocks and soils. We will be exploring the properties of various rocks and classifing them based on their properties.

The children are really enjoying how our book area is organised into author baskets and have asked to vote for a new author to be added to our collection which is really exciting and a good example of the British Value Democracy. Please continue to read at home with your child for pleasure, as this enhances their imagination and vocabulary so much as well as being a wonderful relaxation time.

Thank you for your continued support. Please come and see myself or Mrs Brennan if you have any questions.

Love from Mrs Rice and Mrs Brennan xxx

This will then help us plan and write our own myth over the coming weeks.

In Shared Reading, we will continue to read our book ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’. Our focus next week will be on drawing inferences and making comparisons within the text. We will use our inference skills to decide how characters feel before comparing these feelings to those of different characters.

During our topic day we will continue to develop our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon era. We will use a range of sources, such as books, the internet and artefacts to help us build knowledge?and understanding of the?Anglo Saxon?era and the impact it had on the British way of life.
