Toucans week beg. 20.9.21

Date: 16th Sep 2021 @ 5:29pm

Week beg 20th September 2021

We are so proud of how well Toucans have settled into Year 6. They have been a pleasure to teach and we are delighted with their positive attitude towards learning both in school and at home.

We have been delighted to see that the children have been completing their homework as expected. Lots of great reading taking place every night. Remember 15 – 20mins and please encourage your child to record what they read in their homework diaries.

Lots of great scores last week with their first weekly spelling test which has shown that they have been working on these at home so thank you.

For homework, we will set another 2 pages in their Maths books this week, please see below. We would also like them to log onto Times Tables Rockstars at least 3 times a week for 15 mins. They have got their log in details in the front of their homework diaries and they also all logged on in class today so that we know they will be able to this by themselves at home.

Homework

Spellings for next week will focus on words ending in shus spelt -tious

Spellings will be tested on Friday 24th September – cautious, infectious, ambitious, superstitious, nutritious, scrumptious, fictitious, infection, nutrition, ambition,

Maths Homework – Key Stage Two Maths SATs Question Book and Times Tables Rockstars

In school we have been exploring Place Value this week so the homework is Negative Numbers page 4 and Rounding page 7 of the SATs book.

Remember you will be set 2 pages to do weekly which you can mark yourself using the answers at the back of the book.

(Maths homework will be set on a Thursday and if the children could bring their books back into school for the following Wednesday so we can check them that would be great. If they are struggling with anything, please don’t hesitate to send the book back sooner and we will do some extra work with them in school)

Curriculum

Maths – Next week we will continue our work on the Four Operations by focusing on Addition and Subtraction.

History – We will continue to learn about the Battle of Hastings and think about why conflicts take place

RE – Our first unit is all about Diversity – appreciating the people all around us in the world today and celebrating their similarities and differences. We will be finding out more about the different religions in the UK

Science – Light

The children have been revising what they know already about light before exploring our topic further. Next week they will be looking at how light travels in straight lines and carry out some investigations

On Friday the 24th September we will have an ART Day focusing on the War Artist Paul Nash. The children will be developing their sketching and painting skills before producing a picture in the style of Nash to reflect the hardship of conflicts. We have their old art t-shirts from last year in school but you are very welcome to send in a fresh one if you wish.

PE day will be on Wednesday (Cricket Coach) and on Friday (Mr Ault). Children can come to school wearing their PE uniform on these days.

Kind regards,

Mrs Whittingham, Mrs Downing, Mr Beswick and Mr Corkill
