Hello everyone and welcome to Skylarks first weekly blog! I will post on our blog each Thursday keeping you up to date with our learning for the week ahead. I will also post information about homework, weekly spellings and any other important information ?

The children in Skylarks Class have had a FANTASTIC first week back in school and I am so proud of how quickly they have settled back into school routines and how hard they are working.

Next week (W.B. 13.09.21)

In our English lessons next week, we will be delving deeper into our new book ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg. We will find out more about the daredevil feat carried out by Annie Edson Taylor and will use this to help us write a first person recount from the viewpoint of one of the anxious bystanders. We will be focusing on using commas after fronted adverbials and organising paragraphs around a theme.

In our reading lessons we will read about more inspirational woman in our text ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’. We will focus on drawing inferences and justifying our answers with evidence (E.g. inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives).

In maths we will be focusing on the place value of numbers to 100,000. We will place these numbers on a number line and will compare them using more than and less than symbols. We will also continue to consolidate our knowledge of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.

In science we will begin to explore our new topic all about materials. The children will plan their own investigations to help them explore the properties of a variety of everyday materials.

In RE we will be thinking about what we already know about Jesus’ teachings. We will consider what the bible says about how Christians should live, which will lead us into our new topic about the sermon on the mount.

During our topic day we will explore the question ‘Why did the Roman Empire conquer Britain?’ The children will use their enquiry skills to find out more about the importance of trade, land, slaves, food and growing an army for the Romans.

Our PE days for the Autumn will be Thursday (Swimming) and Friday (Games) so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue. On Thursday your child will also need to have their swimming costume and towel in a plastic bag.

Homework

In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.

If your child is finding the homework tricky, Mrs Hulse and I will ensure that supervision is provided on a Wednesday lunchtime for your child to ask any questions or receive some support to complete their homework.

The children should complete page 7 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 17th September. This homework is looking at place value.

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 17th September will focus on words ending with the silent letter b:

thumb, numb, crumb, debt, doubt, limb, combed, tomb

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ? Have a lovely weekend everyone!
