Good morning Starlings

I hope you had a lovely day of home learning yesterday and managed to complete some of our 44 ways of being kind. Mrs Southern completed a random act of kindness by writing a lovely little message for each member of her family. What act of kindness are you going to do today? Don’t forget to share your kind gestures on Twitter.

Please continue to follow our attached timetable and task list today. Below are some other activities that you might like to try today.

Reading

Open the document below ‘ea Phoneme Spotter Comprehension’. Read the letter on the left hand of the page. Then, answer the questions 1-4. The focus sound is ‘ea’. Here is a video to recap this sound (I know how much you all love Geraldine!)

Creative

Design a menu for your dream day of food. Think about what you would have for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks and drinks.

Songs

Here are some of the songs that we enjoyed together when we were in school. Please revisit and recap our previous learning. They are very helpful, and I bet you could show your grown up's what you know.

Science

  • Can you sort animals by what they eat? Please revisit the science words herbivore, omnivore and carivore. What do these words mean? Play the game by selecting if an animal is a herbivore, omnivore or a carivore.

  • I have attached another great set of Science experiments to conduct with kids at home. These fun and easy science experiments are great to do at home because they require ingredients you are likely to already have in the kitchen. The pack contains four different science experiments including a dissolving experiment, make your own lava lamp, fun with density and fireworks in a glass. Perhaps you could be a pirate today and complete one of our ‘Pirate Science Experiments’ at home?

Maths

  • Can you play the attached 2D shape game? I wonder who will win by getting 4 in a row first?

  • For those of you who enjoyed sorting the number sentences yesterday, I have attached an exciting number bonds to 20 sorting game for you to complete today. Remember to use your number line or objects to help you to calculate accurately.

Message from Mrs Powell

Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work. Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions.

Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching.  As the boy walked, he paused every so often and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea.  The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning!  May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”

The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”

The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

We all have the opportunity to help create positive change.  You might not be able to change the entire world, but at least you can change a small part of it, for someone. Break the big challenge down into smaller pieces and then take those one at a time – like one starfish at a time.  Remember you can achieve anything!

Have a wonderful day and remember just how special you all are to Mrs Southern and I.

Miss Gillam
