Hello everyone ?

Welcome back to our weekly blog! A great first week back for Skylarks Class. Our trip on Tuesday was fantastic and I’m sure the children have told you all about their new knowledge of Viking and Anglo-Saxon society. The children were a credit to themselves and Lostock ?

This week in our English lessons we will delve into our new book ‘The Darkest Dark’ by Chris Hadfield. We will focus on technical vocabulary and relative clauses and will use these to write a biography about Hadfield’s early life and a recount of one of his childhood events.

In our reading lessons will continue to read about the International Space Station and will focus our learning on how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning.

In maths we will continue to focus on fractions. In particular, we will learn how to add and subtract fractions including mixed numbers. We will also consolidate our knowledge of the four operations through 4-a-day activities.

During our topic day we will use our learning from our trip to Tatton Hall as well as further research to answer the enquiry question, ‘Were the Vikings ruthless killers or peaceful settlers?’

In science we will learn the name, size and position of each of the planets and will create our own labelled diagrams. We will also learn about the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the Sun. Finally, we will discover that ancient astronomers believed in the geocentric model of the solar system, and the reasons why it was replaced by the heliocentric model.

In RE we will be learning about the difference between ‘forgiveness’ and ‘justice’. We will look at examples of both in the bible before debating whether forgiveness and justice can go hand in hand.

Our PE days will be Thursday and Friday so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue.

Homework

The children should complete pages 30 and 31 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 18th June. This homework is looking at adding and subtracting fractions.

Remember, if your child is unable to complete their homework at home, Mrs Hulse and I will ensure that supervision is provided on a Wednesday lunchtime so that they can complete it in school. During this lunchtime, any children who may be struggling on a particular question at home can also come to ask an adult for help.

Please encourage your child to read and practice their spellings/times tables in addition to their maths homework.

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 18th June will be the next 10 words from the year 5/6 statutory word list:

identity, immediately, individual, interfere, interrupt, language, leisure, lightning, marvellous, mischievous

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to get in contact ?
