Skylarks WB 11.10.21

Date: 7th Oct 2021 @ 7:57am

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

Another super week of learning for Skylarks Class. I am so proud of the hard-working and enthusiastic attitude shown in our classroom every single day. Keep it up Skylarks!

Next week (W.B. 11.10.21)

In our English lessons next week, we will finish reading our book ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg. We will use our retrieval and summarising skills to help us create a timeline of the whole story. We will then look closely at a range of diary entries to help us understand the features of them. This will help us as we plan and write our own sequence of diary entries to end this unit of work.

In our reading lessons we will read about more inspirational woman in our text ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’. We will continue to focus on drawing inferences, justifying our answers with evidence (E.g. inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives) and making comparisons within and across texts.

In maths we will be moving on to look at the formal written methods of addition and subtraction, to include 6-digit numbers. We will also learn how we can use estimation and rounding to help us check an answer.

In science we will be defining the terms ‘soluble’ and ‘insoluble’. We will then predict which materials will dissolve and which won’t before carrying out an investigation to see if our predictions were correct.

In RE we will continue to debate the point, ‘Are Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount still important today?’ This week, we will record our responses in our book, giving evidence to support our opinion.

We will also have a computing day on Friday where we will continue to work on our ‘Keynote’ presentations about how computers impact our lives.

Our PE days for the Autumn will be Thursday (Swimming) and Friday (Games) so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue. On Thursday your child will also need to have their swimming costume and towel in a plastic bag.

Next week we will have a one-off additional PE session on Wednesday 13th October (cricket) and so the children may come to school in their PE on this day.

Homework

In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.

If your child is finding the homework tricky, Mrs Hulse and I will ensure that supervision is provided on a Wednesday lunchtime for your child to ask any questions or receive some support to complete their homework.

The children should complete page 11 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 15th October. This homework is looking at Roman numerals.

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 15th October will continue to focus on words with the -ible suffix:

invisible, edible, flexible, resistible, responsible, impossible, irreversible, convertible

Please encourage your child to learn the root word before adding the -ible suffix.

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ? Have a lovely weekend everyone!
