Rights Respecting Schools Award

At Lostock the children are at the heart of everything we do. With our vision in mind, we teach our pupils about the rights they hold as God’s children. We are really proud to have received the Bronze Rights Respecting Schools Award in January 2024 and the Silver Award in January 2026.

Comment from our Silver report:

Pupils demonstrated an excellent knowledge of the CRC and why rights are important and relevant to their lives. One pupil explained, “Rights are for all children , everywhere. Leaders of countries have come together to decide on the rights.”

Pupils agreed that they feel listened to by duty bearers, and this is important because, “… children have the right to speak . Otherwise, if we didn’t speak up , we ’d be sadder.”

There is a strong commitment by senior leaders to embed RRSA into the culture and ethos of the school. The headteacher spoke passionately about how staff, “… imagine what we want our children to leave our school with. ” She added, “ Knowing their rights give s children a foundation . It gives them belief and knowledge. ”

The RRSA Lead commented, “We want to show the children that you ’re in Lostock, but this is what is going on in the world, and this is how you can get in volved. ”

Global citizenship and advocacy are strong and pupils understand how these concepts links to rights . A pupil’s idea has led to the creation of a ‘School Supermarket’ that is accessed by pupils, staff and families . Products are sold at a cheaper price, and left -over food is shared out on Free Food Friday. One member of staff explained, “Our pupils feel safe enough to be able to have a voice and know that if they use their voice, they will be listened to and valued. ”

What is the Rights Respecting Schools Award?

The UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
