Our Christian Values are Hope, Respect, Friendship, Love, Courage, Forgiveness

Skylarks WB 4.10.21

Date: 30th Sep 2021 @ 8:10am

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

This week Skylarks have continued to work exceptionally hard in all of our lessons. They have shown such enthusiasm towards everything that they are doing in school and I am sure you are enjoying hearing about their exciting learning when they arrive home.

I am looking forward to chatting with you tomorrow, Friday 1st October, during out Parent/Teacher phone calls. If you are having any problems booking your slot, please contact the office who will be happy to help.

Next week (W.B. 4.10.21)

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our book ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg. We will extend our learning on recount writing from last week’s lessons. We will first create our own story map which we will use to help us write a first-person recount of Annie’s journey along the river. We will also be consolidating our understanding of fronted adverbials and commas and will be applying these throughout our writing.

In our reading lessons we will read about more inspirational woman in our text ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’. We will continue to focus on drawing inferences, justifying our answers with evidence (E.g. inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives) and making comparisons within and across texts.

In maths we will consolidate our learning on place value by solving tricky reasoning and problem solving questions. We will then move on to look at the formal written method of addition to include 6-digit numbers.

In science we will use our investigation plans from the previous lesson to help us answer the question ‘Which material is most effective for the inner lining of a lunch box to keep it cool?’ After completing our investigation, we will choose an appropriate way to present our findings (e.g. table, bar chart, line graph).

In RE we will use our Christian values of respect and friendship to have a class debate. We will use our learning from our discipleship topic to help us debate the question, ‘Do you think Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount are still important today?’

During our topic day we will extend our learning on rivers. We will recap the different features of rivers, before thinking about why rivers are so important (e.g. leisure, tourism, power, industry and transport).

Our PE days for the Autumn will be Thursday (Swimming) and Friday (Games) so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue. On Thursday your child will also need to have their swimming costume and towel in a plastic bag.

Homework

In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.

If your child is finding the homework tricky, Mrs Hulse and I will ensure that supervision is provided on a Wednesday lunchtime for your child to ask any questions or receive some support to complete their homework.

The children should complete page 10 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 8th October. This homework is looking at rounding numbers.

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 8th October will focus on words with the -ible suffix:

possible, terrible, legible, horrible, sensible, reversible, credible, visible

Please encourage your child to learn the root word before adding the -ible suffix.

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ? Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Miss Beattie x
